HOW TO BECOME A GOOD PUBLIC SPEAKER

In the present life, everyone gets an opportunity to speak in front of people whether in school, college, university, office or in certain public meetings etc. The listeners eagerly wait to get some authentic information from our end. So it becomes very important to pay careful attention to prepare a good speech for our audience.

Public speaking is not an easy task, it is an art and some of us are very natural in this task and they get listeners. People like teachers, professors and leaders are perfect in this field as it is an important part of their profession. On the other hand, most of people are not good speakers and become nervous and terrified while delivering a speech in front of the audience. We should not be discouraged, but find certain solutions to deal with this problem in speech making.

The audience always wants to learn or get certain information from our speech. But we always think about the few people who know more than we and are part of the crowd. This may be a big mistake. We should not think about the people who know more than we, but about those who want to learn and get certain knowledge from our speech. It really makes a sense of confidence within us

Certain hints are here to be followed:

1. The most basic thing to deliver a good speech is preparation. We should think about the audience what they need to know and what will inspire them. They want to know what we think about the subject or topic. We just need to keep them interested with our interesting thoughts. Obviously, no one is perfect in this world. But practicing the speech, again and again, can make us good and confident speakers.

2. 1st 2-3 minutes of speech are very sensitive. We should be calm and confident. Really, we will get the attention of the public if we use the words carefully and trust ourselves.

3. Sometimes, we feel nervous in front of the audience. In such a situation, we should take a deep breath before starting a speech.

4. Looking at an object or a picture in the hall can be a source of inspiration and help to get back on track whenever we lose our focus during the speech.

5. Instead of looking in the eyes of people, look at their foreheads. Looking into the eyes of people can make us a little nervous.

6. We should write down keywords or main points on a piece of paper and put them in our pockets while delivering a lecture. It will help us to remember the speech.

7. If we begin a speech with a short joke, it can act as an ice-breaker. I remember a speech by one of my colleagues on his retirement when he said," I would like to thank everybody who honoured me with beautiful presents and anybody who did not......I will see you outside later!" Everybody laughed at this pathetic joke. Such a type of beginning can give us a little confidence and relaxation. The use of certain wit and humour in our speech can make people interested.

8. The first two or three minutes of speech decide our talent for public speaking. So this is the time when our public judges whether they should hear us or not. We have to create interest in our audience by using local dialects and accents. Let them expect whatever they want to hear.

9. Careful preparation is required to make a speech successful. One should plan well. A good speaker should choose a suitable public speaking style and subject matter according to the taste of the audience.

10. Another very important tool of good communication is body language. If we are unaware about the basics of body language, we are missing a valuable tool of public speaking. Our facial expressions, smiling, eye contacts, hand gestures and good body postures, etc. play very important roles to make us a perfect public speakers.

If we go through the history of human civilization, it is observed that people expressed their confidence and strength not only by force but also by the noble art of public speaking. So a good speaker may be the winner of millions of hearts.
