How to be happy

What is happiness?

The mental state of having pleasant or positive emotions is happiness.

In my experience, a lot of people define happiness as intense joy, which may make it more difficult to experience happiness in our daily lives. In point of fact, there are numerous levels of happiness, ranging from contentment to exhilarating elation.

On a regular basis, many of us set out on a quest to achieve exhilarating levels of happiness, but this frequently leads to disappointment. Try focusing on contentment rather than happiness.

How to find happiness within yourself Now that I've introduced you to the idea of contentment, here are six steps I typically suggest to anyone who wants to feel more optimistic about their day-to-day life. Changing the way you think about happiness and the places you get it can be small changes that really make a difference. My six-step strategy for making your life and work happier:

1. Stop chasing happiness

Because many people associate happiness with achieving certain objectives or goals. As a result of this practice, happiness is treated as a reward rather than an emotion that should be felt every day.

Allow yourself to feel happiness whenever it comes your way rather than pursuing goals and, by extension, happiness.

2. GET RID OF YOUR OWN HAPPINESS BARRIERS

Following on from the first point, the second drawback of basing your happiness on external goals is that you run the risk of developing negative thinking patterns. You may forget that happiness comes from within and can be found by looking within rather than waiting for an external event to bring it about by placing your happiness on something external.

Try changing the way you think about happiness. Instead of making it a long-term goal, think about what makes you happy every day. This could be spending time with friends, family, or a loved one, or engaging in a particular activity like painting, cycling, or cooking.

Give yourself permission to regularly schedule these happy moments in your life.

Practice looking into yourself

In order to find happiness within yourself is the third step. This is a worthwhile habit-forming activity that requires time and effort.

Start checking in with yourself on a regular basis to find out how you're feeling. If you're feeling stressed, try implementing a stress management strategy or creating a self-care plan if you think you could do better.

Additionally, if you require assistance monitoring your mental health and well-being, consider joining the Calmer Community, our membership platform with a variety of monthly activities and practices.

4. BUILD YOUR SELF-ESTEEM

Once you've started talking to yourself, you can start working on any problems you might be having. Internal issues frequently lower self-esteem, so taking care of yourself may be worthwhile.

According to the NHS, "The best way to improve your self-esteem is to treat yourself as you'd treat a valued friend, in a positive but honest way," focusing on your self-esteem can make you happy.

If you also work for yourself, this is a great way to review how you take care of yourself. You can reframe how you treat yourself by thinking of yourself as your best friend or boss. This will allow you to treat yourself with more kindness and fairness.

In addition, give yourself permission to be vulnerable, even at work. Finding support for your issues or finding a solution to them all starts with identifying your weak points and problem areas.

5. BE PRESENT

Taking time throughout the day to truly take in your surroundings and connect with your emotions on a deeper level is similar to practicing looking inward. You might want to give mindfulness practices at work a try in your role or with your team because they are becoming increasingly popular with companies like Google and Facebook.

Being present may also help you experience happiness on a deeper and more consistent basis.

6. APPRECIATE YOURSELF TAKE TIME

The final step in my six-step process is to give yourself time to appreciate yourself. Take pride in your life, work, and accomplishments. Simply pondering your past events—whether they were achievements or simply pleasant ones—can help you find happiness.

Try regularly reflecting on your journey if you're an entrepreneur or freelancer. It's easy to get caught up in plans for the future and forget how well you did before. You will not only relive the emotions associated with particular milestones if you concentrate on your past experiences, but you will also discover methods for enhancing both yourself and your business.
