Writing reflects a student's grasp of the subject matter, his ability to present his point of view convincingly, his command over the language, and above all, his mental maturity, i.e., the development of his reasoning faculty-undoubtedly, it is an important activity. Therefore, to test a student’s writing skills, many short and long-term tasks are included in the latest syllabus. They are in the form of a diary entry, article, and original short story.
Some useful tips for effective writing:
- Be Precise and Relevant:
Being precise means giving the required information clearly, relevant, and accurately, which avoids repetition and other superfluous details. The student should carefully select the topic, think it over and jot down the relevant material. He then should frame an outline which he should develop in the matter. According to the requirement of the answer, he should use three, four, or five paragraphs carefully embracing one main idea or argument in one paragraph. He should see that all the paragraphs should be closely connected with the topic or the point made in the writing task.
- Logical Unity
Once the material has been collected, the student should arrange the material in a logically convincingly manner. He should use cohesive devices to bright about unity and clarity in writing. If the writing lacks cohesion or logical unity, it fails to impress the reader. Vague and ambiguous expressions should be carefully avoided so that the writing becomes easily understandable.
- Clear Progression
Whatever a student writes, it should have a proper beginning, a middle, and an end, i.e., a conclusion. A beginning is that which introduces a topic in a simple and clear-cut way. We can say it’s bedrock. A middle is that which shows a progression of ideas that are likely to reach a sound conclusion. Unless to use a paragraph, the student should use several paragraphs. Each paragraph should have one main idea or argument. It should develop the topic of a sentence or be closely connected with it.
