What Is Puget's Disease?
It is a type of eczema change in the skin of the nipple, and most women who grow it, will develop breast cancer.
Puget’s Disease occurs in about 1 or 2% of women with breast cancer, initially diagnosed as scaly, a red rash that affects the nipple and areola. It can be very painful, it can bleed, and it will never go away.
The disease can be difficult to diagnose, as it may be very similar to other skin problems such as eczema or dermatitis, but the disease usually affects the nipple first and then spreads to the areola, while other skin problems usually start around, first before spreading to the nipple.

“Puget's disease: This is a rare form of breast cancer, and it can affect the outside of the breast, nipple and areola. It appeared to be a rash, which later became an ulcer with an outer crust. I wouldn’t suspect it was breast cancer, but it did happen. My nipple was no different from mine, but the rash bothered me, so I went to the doctor for that. At times, it stung and hurt, but otherwise it did not bother me.
It was just bad and a nuisance, and it could not be erased with all the creams prescribed by my doctor and dermatologist with dermatitis just before my eyes, before this rash.
They seemed worried. Mine started as a single red lump in the areola. One of the biggest problems with Puget's nipple disease is that the symptoms appear harmless. It is often thought of as skin rashes or infections, leading to poor delays in diagnosis and care.
What are the symptoms? Symptoms include:
Continuous redness, itching, and cracking of your nipple causing itching and burning. (As I said, mine did not bite or get too hot, and I had no flow that I could, but it had crust on the outer edges on one side.)
An ulcer on your nipple that will not heal. (Mine was in the areola area and the area looked very white in the middle of the nipple).
Usually only one nipple is affected. How are we diagnosed? Your doctor will do a physical exam and should recommend a mammogram for both breasts, done immediately.
Even if the redness, itching and itching are very similar to dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), your doctor should suspect cancer if the sore is only on one breast. Your doctor should perform a biopsy of your wound to confirm what happened.
