The truth is, auditions are a frustrating experience for players. So by following these steps you will have a much better chance of getting a role. Upon initially receiving the interview, you or your agent will need to submit a photo and restart it to the acting director. Sometimes you will find an open phone where anyone can come down but this is different. Most auditions are for invitation only. If you are called for an interview you will usually be given what are called “sides” or a few pages of text that you will need to read in the interview.
At the theater, you may need to have some sort of monologue. The first thing you need to do is read the text and edit the paragraph. Find out all you can about the character to play. The lines are not important yet. Just put your focus on the character. How old you are, where you come from, how the character feels about the other characters in the story. Only after you know everything you need to know about the character when you start reading your lines. Use whatever way you feel comfortable. You will not need to know all the scripts in the interview but be prepared. Before you go to the interview, Wear clothes that fit the character and the story. When playing cowboy don't wear a business suit. Jeans and boots for this role will do just fine. Warm up with a conversation just as the pot warms up before a football game. Do stretches and voice exercises. It is normal to be nervous but when you prepare yourself, you will not be afraid and you will be able to relax a bit. When you get to the interview, be patient. Avoid talking to other characters. They will only try to distract you. Focus on what you came to do.
If you are studying to become an acting director, be prepared for anything. Some may sit down and talk with you for a few minutes while others just go into business. Forget about this conversation. Make it look like a product. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Make the director believe YOU ARE A CHARACTER. They want you to be the best person in the role because that means your job is done. There are some things you should not do when reading a role play book. Honest compliments are fine but the imitation director will know if you have just registered. Without shaking his hand when you enter, never touch the character.
Lastly, do not abandon the office. Some very active actors will do this in the heat of playing the visual space. This is a sure way to get the assignment. When you have finished reading the director will let you know when they will get back to you. Stop it like that. Do not make a scene. Just be professional and go. If the cast director likes your game you will be asked to come back. During this time there will be fewer people being tested and more people will be watching your performance. Maybe some producers, directors, and writers. Wear the same clothes you wore in the first interview and apply the same functionality. Do not think for yourself. When they call you again they like what they saw for the first time. Do not confuse success with failure. Keep records of each study. Write down what you have done and what you think you can do better in the future. If something went wrong, write down what it was. The more auditions you make, the better.
