Since the founding of this blog, I have had a lot of contacts where people have wanted to tell their own lives, tell their own stories. While everyone’s story is different, many seem to have similar things happening in their lives and many go through the same parenting-related thoughts and emotions. The messages have been nice to read because they give me a warm feeling that I am not alone. Equally, I believe it is good to open up one’s own life to someone who understands the situation right away and does not condemn or blame. There are so many types of special parenting that at least I don’t feel the need to criticize anyone.
Peer support is empowering. I have not yet come across a life situation where talking to a peer does not bring any relief and help. It is so much easier for another person to understand if you have a similar life experience. And that understanding is often much deeper than what can be expressed in words alone. It’s liberating when you can tell, but don’t have to explain. So thank you to all of you who have shared your story with me. I will continue to receive messages.
However, one thing has left me bothered: some have said they are struggling with the same things alone. Maybe they’re just referring to single parenthood, I don’t know. I hope they also have people in their lives to support them in the midst of the challenges of special parenting. It’s downright scary to think that some are really completely alone in difficult life situations. And there are far too many of these people.
I haven’t terribly distributed advice on this blog, but I’m willing to give that kind of advice to seek peer support. Even if the network of relatives and friends is strong, peer support is very good. Different organizations organize very high-quality peer-to-peer activities, and in addition, there are self-directed groups suitable for different life situations, e.g. From Facebook. Both the activities of the organizations and the Facebook groups can be applied at a very low threshold.
