The three main categories into which the branches of science—also known as sciences, scientific areas, or scientific disciplines—are typically separated are as follows:
Formal sciences: the study of formal systems using an a priori approach rather than an empirical one, such as those found in the fields of mathematics and logic.
The study of natural phenomena, including cosmological, geological, physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the cosmos, is known as the natural sciences. Physical science and life science (or biology) are the two primary areas of natural science.
The social and cultural dimensions of human behavior are studied in the social sciences.
The foundation of scientific knowledge must be observable phenomena, which can be independently confirmed by other researchers operating in the same environment. Even among scientific disciplines, there may be differences in this verifiability.

Formal science

In contrast to other fields, the formal sciences focus on the characteristics of formal systems that are defined by rules and definitions rather than the applicability of theories derived from real-world observations (empirical knowledge). As a result, opinions differ over whether the formal sciences truly qualify as sciences. However, the development and testing of scientific models pertaining to observable reality need the use of formal science methods, and significant advancements in the formal sciences have frequently made significant advancements in the empirical sciences possible.
Natural science
Natural science is a field of study that uses empirical data from experimentation and observation to describe, predict, and comprehend natural occurrences. To strive to assure the legitimacy of scientific advancements, procedures like peer review and reproducibility of discoveries are employed.
Life science and physical science are the two primary subfields of natural science. Earth science, physics, chemistry, and astronomy are the areas of physical science. Biology is another name for life science. These natural science branches can be further subdivided into more specific branches, or fields.
Physical science
Unlike the life sciences, physical science is an umbrella term for the areas of natural science that focus on studying non-living things. Nevertheless, given that many fields of physical science also examine biological processes, the term "physical" unintentionally draws an arbitrary divide. Earth science
The term "earth science," which encompasses all sciences pertaining to the planet Earth, is also used to refer to geology, the geosciences, or the Earth sciences.Given that Earth is the only planet known to support life, it is debatably a unique situation in planetary science. In Earth sciences, there are reductionist and holistic methods. In addition to the physical earth, the study of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere may be included in the formal field of Earth sciences. The methods that Earth scientists typically employ to develop a quantitative understanding of how the Earth system functions and how it evolved to its current condition include techniques from physics, chemistry, biology, geography, chronology, and mathematics.
