How telemarketing is a lucrative profession

The work of a telemarketer does not evoke an immediate sense of admiration in all of us. Few toddlers name telemarketing as their dream profession and the industry is not valued by adults either.

However, a surprising number of telemarketers say they like their profession. Earnings are very competitive at their best, working hours are flexible and co-workers are good. The work of a telemarketer can often also be done as location-independent teleworking.

 What exactly is telemarketing?

Telemarketing refers to all distance and telemarketing where the product is sold by telephone. Telemarketing also includes arranging customer appointments by telephone, ie “booking”.

Telephone sales surfaced as a phenomenon in the early 1990s, when mobile phones gradually began to become more common in Finland. Of course, a real leap forward has taken place since then - today, an automated calling system handles the tapping of telephone numbers, and sales negotiators are able to whiten their customers with data based on surveys, for example.

 Telemarketer's salary

According to the salary data for 2018, the average salary of a telephone salesman working in Finland was EUR 3,239 and the average earnings of all Finns were EUR 3,470. The pay of telemarketers is thus, according to official readings, well in line with that of other private sectors.

In practice, however, the wages of telemarketers vary slightly more than in other sectors. Some telemarketers earn only about a couple of tons in full-time jobs, and top sellers, in turn, can be in the same paycheck as doctors.

 Who is suitable for telemarketing?

Telemarketing work is well suited for an outgoing and sales-minded person. The best salespeople don’t drop the memorized sales speech into the customer’s ear, but listen and talk.

A good salesperson will not stumble or waste their own or the customer’s time.

The good aspects of telemarketing work

  • Salary

  • Flexible working hours

  • Good teamwork in the industry

  • Opportunity for teleworking and working abroad

  • Interactive and varied work image

 Cons of telemarketing work

  • Immediate and sometimes harsh customer feedback

  • The industry has a bad reputation

  • Commission pay: a bad day is hard to earn

How do I become a telemarketer?

Even on high-speed google, job search sites on the Internet provide places for telemarketers who are constantly open. In fact, there are so many telecommuting jobs on offer that even a person with previous sales experience can afford to choose their job.

Before sending the application, it is worth whipping the best of the companies off.

Job search is usually traditionally done through an online application. The applicant will then either be given a telephone interview or will be called for an interview with the office. When applying for telecommuting, the interview is conducted either via a video connection or by telephone alone.

New employees are always introduced to the products or services they sell through short (or sometimes longer) training. The depth of the familiarity is influenced by the type of product being sold: it is, of course, a slightly different matter to sell Aku Duck or business insurance.
