Everyone is well aware that with his films Baahubali 2 and RRR, director SS Rajamouli has elevated Telugu cinema to previously unheard-of heights. While the whole country of India was going crazy over Baahubali 2, his action epic RRR, starring Ram Charan and NTR, has gone worldwide and won praise from all over the world. Nonetheless, the market for Tamil cinema continues to be bigger than that of Telugu cinema.

Rajamouli has undoubtedly elevated the Telugu cinema industry to new heights, but other star-studded action pictures are still doing within the average range for the Telugu market. The greater picture is aided by the success of Tollywood movies in the Hindi market.

No non-SSR film has ever made more than 300Cr in Telugu regions as of yet, while Tamil films like Vikram, Ponniyin Selvan, and recently Rajinikanth's Jailer have made more than 300Cr in Telugu alone.

Even in foreign markets, the demand for non-SSR films has not improved at all; even films with optimistic themes only gross about $5 million, while Tamil star pictures easily gross $15 million. To close this disparity, Telugu filmmakers ought to elevate their game and produce higher caliber movies. Up till that point, the Tamil film industry continues to outgrow the Telugu industry.

In 2022, the South Indian film industry's revenue nearly doubled year over year to over ₹7,000 crore, or 52% of the pan-Indian film industry's total revenue, according to a research released on Wednesday by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Southern region.

The study states that the earnings of the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema industries in South India nearly doubled to ₹7,836 crore in 2022 from ₹3,988 crore in 2021. The Indian film business is expected to generate ₹15,000 crore in revenue in 2022. 

₹2,950 crore was the highest revenue earned by the Tamil film industry in the southern region, followed by Telugu (₹2,500 crore), Kannada (₹1,570 crore), and Malayalam (₹816 crore).
