After more than six decades of lunar exploration, the United States will finally land an autonomous rover on the moon. But instead of NASA engineers, a dedicated group of college students is responsible for this momentous mission.

The Iris rover was developed by students, faculty and alumni at Carnegie Mellon University over the span of three years. It is being carried to the moon as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, the agency’s foray into partnering with the commercial space industry. Initially, it was scheduled to launch in late 2021 or early 2022, but setbacks in NASA’s moon agenda delayed the launch to this spring.

This American moon rover - nicknamed 'Viper'- is set to launch next year and it quite unique rover. Different from other rovers, this one was developed by university students and is only 4.4 pounds (2 kilograms). Additionally, its wheels are made out of carbon-fiber and are the size of bottle caps. Pretty incredible, right? Although its mission is going to be fairly short - only lasting 60 hours- it will be completing many valuable tasks such as snapping pictures of the moon's surface for geographic study and testing new localization methods. The Carnegie Mellon team, in addition to Iris, plans to send an art installation called the Moon Ark. This time capsule is filled with poems, music, pictures, and small objects that convey a narrative that appreciated now, and will be 1,000 years down the road, Dylan Vi tone (opens in new tab), an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon and Moon Ark director said in a statement (opens in new tab). A second, identical ark is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

The Moon Ark and its pocket-sized buddy the rover will 

United Launch Alliance's Vulcan centaur rocket on a journey to space. They will be Astronautic's responsibility once they land on the lunar surface via Peregrine lander.
