New Delhi. Earthquake tremors have been felt in many parts of North India including Delhi NCR. There is news of earthquake in many parts of Himachal, Rajasthan. Apart from India, tremors were also felt in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Tajikistan and China. The epicenter of the earthquake is being told as Afghanistan. Its intensity is 7.7 on the Richter scale.
The sliding of the plates inside the earth becomes the reason
Actually there are many plates inside the earth which are displaced from time to time. This theory is called plate tectonics in English and plate tectonics in Hindi. According to this theory, the upper layer of the earth is about 80 to 100 kilometers thick, which is called the lithosphere. In this part of the earth, there are plates broken into many pieces which keep floating.
Normally these plates move at a speed of 10-40 mm per year. However, the speed of some of them is also 160 mm per year. The Richter scale is used to measure the intensity of an earthquake. This is called the Richter Magnitude Test Scale. Earthquake waves are measured on the basis of Richter scale from 1 to 9.
Not one but many earthquake zones in the country.
Earthquake risk varies from place to place in the Indian subcontinent. India has been divided into four parts Zone-2, Zone-3, Zone-4 and Zone-5 on the basis of earthquake area. Zone 2 is the least dangerous zone and Zone-5 is considered to be the most dangerous zone.
All the states of North-East, Jammu-Kashmir, Uttarakhand and some parts of Himachal Pradesh come under Zone-5 only. From low altitude parts of Uttarakhand to most parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi come under Zone-4. Central India falls in Zone-3 with relatively less danger, while most parts of the South come in Zone-2 with limited danger.
How to estimate intensity
The intensity of an earthquake is estimated by the waves of energy emanating from its center (epicentre). This wave that spreads up to hundreds of kilometers causes vibrations. Even cracks fall in the earth. If the depth of the earth is shallow, then the energy coming out of it is very close to the surface, which causes terrible destruction. The earthquakes that occur in the depth of the earth do not cause much damage on the surface. Tsunami arises when an earthquake occurs in the sea.
How many earthquakes are recorded in North India
Till the year 2020, 745 earthquakes were recorded in the National Seismological Network. In which 26 such incidents were measured from September 2017 to August 2020 in Delhi-NCR. Whose intensity was 3.0 or above on the Richter scale. If we look at the data of the last 20 years, then there is no definite pattern of earthquakes in North India. Although in the year 2020, many small and big earthquakes were felt in Delhi and NCR. Due to which a lot of concern was spread.
