1. Introduction-Mother Teresa (1910-1997)
• Born in Skopje, Macedonia (Greece)
• Joined the Irish community of nuns, Sisters of Loreto. Which had missions in India
• Did initial training in Dublin and then came to India
• On 7thOctober 1950, started her own order “The Missionaries of Charity” to care for those who had no one to look after them
• Although born a Yugoslav, Indianized herself totally
• Became a global citizen through her selfless service to the world community
• Has established more than a hundred missions in different parts of the world who continue to serve the destitute and the marginalized
2. Opening Incident
• “ I shall not leave this hospital until I know that you have given her a bed.”
• Mother Teresa had picked up the wretched creature, half-eaten by rats and ants, and carried her to the nearest hospital
• Her firmness led to the admission of the lady into the hospital
3. Calcutta-Situation hopeless
• Too much populated
• Cannot cope up with population
• So many of them live and die on pavements
• People suffer the appalling heat of the day chill of the night hunger and loneliness
• Poor people beg for food and when they starve they steal
• Until disease attacks them they suffer and then used to die in despair
4. Description of Mother Teresa
• Little woman
• Barely five feet tall
• Wore a cheap white sari with a blue border and a small cross hanging below her left shoulder
• Began her work in Calcutta among ‘the poorest of the poor’
• A lady of small stature frail in build, soft-spoken
• Clearly a very determined woman of great courage
5. Birth and Early life
• At the age of 12 decided to be a missionary
• At thorn in Yugoslavia in 1910
• e age of 18, decided to be a nun
• Was sent to Loreto Abbey, Dublin, where the girls trained for work in India
• In India, was first appointed as Geography mistress at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta
• Later she became the Principal
6. Mother Teresa’s strong will
Criticism could never stop Mother Teresa. She was sure that what she does is a service to Christ. She never considered failure. She told: “. All things work together for good to them that love God.” When faced with food shortage, she was certain, is God looking after us. She combined faith in God with common sense. She would carry an empty bag on her journeys by plane to over food. She never took money for services rendered. Order works on donations freely given from anyone willing to help. Neither man nor beast could deter her.
7. Existing Centers
• There are today 61 cent resin India and 28 in other countries
• There are about 1000 sisters and 200 brothers
• Al sisters and brothers are well-educated. They have to take exams before getting accepted
8. Recognition
• Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979
• The 90,000 pounds which she received was used entirely for the extension of her work
9. Remarks
• She said: God has fed us all without any income of our own
• “Write about the work here, not about me. I am not important”
