If you have a large amount of land that you haven't used, you might consider planting an orchard. If you have previous experience planting and maintaining trees, that's another reason you would be perfect for maintaining an orchard. This may seem like an overwhelming thing to do, but it is actually quite simple. It only requires some commitment.
If you've never planted a tree on your property, you might not want to invest the time and money to buy a lot of trees. If you are inexperienced, you may want to start with just one or two trees, so you can feel the process of growing. Once you have successfully pruned a tree to adulthood, you probably have enough experience to handle many trees. However, you should never plant so many trees that you are about to become overwhelmed. Plant only what you can handle.
Generally, if you're just starting out with a large amount of trees, you'll want them all to be the same type. If they all require the same amount of water and nutrients, you won't have to spend as much time feeding different types of trees separately. As an added benefit, you will become very familiar with the process of growing that specific tree. You will not be overwhelmed by having so many different types, but you will become a master of that specific type.
If you already have a tree growing on your property that you have maintained since childhood, you know that the soil is acceptable for that type of tree and people like it. Since you've already gone through the process of growing that type of tree, you should have no problem testing the entire soil to make sure it's similar to the section you've already planted. Then it's just a matter of growing more trees and making the process the same as before. Since you've already dealt with similar problems, you probably have a good idea of how to deal with any pests that come along during growth.
Usually in an orchard, trees are planted in a row, then they are cut into two-dimensional shapes. This is referred to as either a fan or espalier shape. In the center there is a main branch that is completely vertical, then several branches that go to the side. If the lateral branches are horizontal, it is known as espalier. If they are inclined, it is known as a fan. Usually these 2 shapes are used in gardens because of how compact they are. By using them, you allow a certain amount of time to live in many more trees. However, if land conservation isn't an issue, or you're not looking to be skilled, you should probably stick with the traditional tree shape.
To help water your trees, you should install either a sprinkler system or an irrigation system. Sprinklers require more maintenance, but if you dig an irrigation ditch, it's really easy to just run the tap for a few minutes every day and reach all the trees. It's just a matter of what you would like.
Once your tree collection begins to bear fruit in large quantities, you may consider starting a fruit stand or attending a farmers market. Instead of letting the fruits go to waste or trying to eat them all (which can lead to some nasty stomach ache), you can let the rest of the world enjoy the product of your intense labor. If you become a popular seller, you can also get a good return on your investment. However, you cannot count on earning a lot of money. Starting an orchard doesn't have to be a capitalist investment. You should only start if you have a passion for trees.
