Researchers at Yale University discovered that social media platforms, especially Twitter, led to amplified moral outrage. The team used special technology such as Artificial Intelligence to follow online patterns of such behavior. But before doing this, they had to determine what they meant by moral outrage. They merged definitions related to biology, sociology, and psychology. In the end, they concluded that this type of outrage was predominantly negative and combined feelings of anger and frustration.
They also discovered that such responses were common when users felt like specific events or subject matters didn’t align with their idea of being moral ‘right’. The team then made practical use of technology to gauge social media trends, algorithms, and patterns. They found that moral outrage was encouraged online. This was done in the form of likes and shares. When users expressed moral outrage, they were likely to gain attention. This, in turn, meant an increase in retweets, shares, and likes. As a result of this, people who expressed moral outrage in one post were likely to express it frequently.
It Radicalizes Politically Moderate People,
Social media has also been linked to making even the politically moderate extreme in terms of views and beliefs. The Yale researchers found that people who adhered more to the politically moderate group, were, in fact, more likely to be influenced by moral outrage and extreme behaviors. The research team discovered that social feedback such as likes and shares greatly impacted politically moderate users.
It was also revealed that social media platforms were responsible for making political views extreme. While it makes sense for the politically extreme to express such levels of outrage, such results among the politically moderate were puzzling for researchers. They believe that the response the latter receives is what plays a major role in causing such behaviors. According to findings, politically moderate groups are more sensitive to feedback.
It has Changed Politics
Yale’s research team also found that social media and responses that arise from it have completely changed the political process. How users respond and react on social media affects entire social and political movements. Just a hashtag is enough to destroy a political campaign. With reactions that are so extreme, the tone of conversations is changing online. In fact, social media can even affect the success and failure of a political campaign. It can either speed up a movement or completely halt it. Cancel culture is also a product of extreme emotions and reactions. This culture completely shuns an individual or group if they don’t align with their moral beliefs. This leaves no room for error and often results in an instant ‘canceling’ or ostracization.
It’s also important to notice that political campaigns focus greatly on social media. In fact, some would argue these sites are given more important than physical campaigning. This is because the importance of such platforms means that campaigns must be successful on Twitter or Facebook in order to work.
Social Media Companies Aren’t Truthful

For instance, climate change has been regarded as a critical issue because of the involvement of social media. If this wasn't the case, the issue wouldn’t have been the importance it deserves. Similarly, certain political campaigns have been unveiled by social media. These contained questionable footage regarding the US administration. If nothing else, at least they started a debate around such important issues.
