How safe are our children on the roads

I was waiting for my appointment with a doctor when I suddenly saw a couple rushing into the emergency ward, carrying their young son. The child had met with a bicycle accident and was unconscious. His parents were crying, calling his name, and pleading with the doctors to save him. Their helplessness and grief created an atmosphere of fear and silence. It was a heartbreaking sight that I will never forget.
A few moments later, I recognized the child. He was one of my students.
My heart sank. I had seen him smiling in the classroom, full of energy and dreams. Seeing him lying motionless in his parents' arms was something I never imagined. As a teacher, I felt the pain not only of his family but also of someone who had watched him learn, laugh, and grow. In that moment, I realized that every child is someone's entire world.
This incident reminded me that road accidents are not just statistics reported in newspapers. Behind every accident is a family living through fear, tears, and uncertainty. A single moment of carelessness can change many lives forever.
Children love to ride bicycles and play outdoors, but they often do not understand the dangers of traffic. Parents must teach them road safety, ensure they wear helmets, and supervise them whenever necessary. Drivers must slow down near schools and residential areas, and everyone must respect traffic rules.
As I left the hospital, I carried a heavy heart and a silent prayer for my student. I hope he recovers soon and returns to his classroom with the same cheerful smile that brightened our days.
Before we ask who is responsible after an accident, we should ask ourselves: Are we doing enough to keep our children safe on the roads?
