He is the reigning World Twenty20 Player of the Year, an ICC World Player of the Decade, and he has now proved that his place in the history books is not confined to just a relatively short period. Pakistan legend Abed Ali believes Ba bar Adam is the Greatest T20 batsman of all time. And while the brilliant opening batsman is quick to stress that there are many worthy candidates for the title, his former Pakistan captain believes that the 26-year-old is the perfect man to ever break the 7000,run barrier of the format. “I think Ba bar is the greatest T20 batsman to have played cricket in any part of the world,” said Abed Ali. “He is not only the highest scorer of all time in Pakistan Cricket, but also all forms of the game.” Morally speaking, Abed’s comment is a rather pertinent one, since he set a new record when he took the world by storm and scored 1100 runs in Pakistan’s T20 campaign last year. In short, Ba bar has become the most accomplished player in all three formats since the global pandemic wiped out last year’s World Cup.
Moreover, the ageless Abed recalled how he used to wade into the argument between Ba bar and the respected MS Dhoti when the latter led the Indian cricket team to world domination. “When I was Pakistan captain, Ba bar, as the new opening batsman, was often shown in the changing room, ‘What's going on?’ and we would reply with a loud 'him’, while Dhoti, as the Indian captain, would just reply that 'you'.” It is fair to say that with nearly 600 single-day games under his belt, Ba bar is now the most experienced batsman in the format.
Ba bar is constantly criticized for his lack of Test cricket, but with a record in T20 history that is second only to Dhoti's, Ba bar would seem to have the last laugh on critics.
This is why former Pakistan opener Mohammad Yousuf believes that he is such a valuable asset for Pakistan.
I do not care much about the format of cricket. I have seen Ba bar as a captain at school and with Pakistan as he defended himself, and he was seen as the golden boy in Pakistan cricket,” said Mohammad Yousuf.
“Even when Dhoti was coming to Pakistan, Ba bar was with him in his side.”
Of course, Abed's love for Ba bar, who was unveiled as an opening batsman for Pakistan back in December 2018, does not come easily. He also used to be known as “Abed Burkhart”.
“When Ba bar was growing up and just learning how to play, he had this clique of friends who always wanted to congratulate him. But I tried to be the curmudgeonly one and block them,” said Abed.
“They always used to ask, ‘Abed Surkhawat, what was so special about his game? He was little when he started school’.
“If a guy can score 1500-2000,runs and still faces criticism, then there is something wrong with the player.”
If you are confused as to what he means by “critics” then ask yourself if India feels that its cricket team needs a new open source batsman on its team to achieve greater success.
Ba bar has scored a century per fifty-overs while on a debut stint for Pakistan, which illustrates that he has a rare ability that has put a strain on the bowlers of the land which is rightfully accepted as the birthplace of all great batsmen.
While other greats such as Satin, Virender Sewage, and Virat Kohli may be yet to break 2500 runs in the format, Ba bar’s record may yet topple them and create a new benchmark for fast-forwarding time.
If not for Sewage, Ba bar could very well be the fastest player to a 5000-run mark, a feat a part of Virat Kohli achieved first.
Ba bar Adam has scored 4638 runs in 118 T20I internationals.
