How PSA: Crossfire X Campaign, Meant For Xbox Game Pass, Is Currently Locked Behind Paywall

Crossfire X comes to Xbox consoles today, but the Crossfire X campaign that's meant to be in Xbox Game Pass is not yet appearing for subscribers. The campaign is split into two parts; Operation Catalyst, the first of those story modes, is the one destined for Game Pass, but since the game launched several hours ago, that campaign has been stuck behind a paywall.

The reason for this is unclear, but it's certainly unintentional. Operation Specter is the second campaign that all players, including Game Pass subscribers, will need to buy as part of the game's Ultimate Package should they want to play through all story content, but Operation Catalyst is meant for Game Pass and just not showing up as yet. The story was developed in partnership with remedy, creator of Control and Alan Wake, so there has been some interest leading up to launch.

In the meantime, if you don't have Game Pass (or if you do, but you're eager to play), you can gain access to Operation Catalyst for $10 ($9 for Game Pass subscribers), or as part of the game's Ultimate Package as well, alongside the premium Season 1 battle pass and second campaign. That complete package sells for $30 ($25 for Game Pass subscribers). For total clarity, here's how it's meant to all shake out once the storefront issues are resolved:

  • Crossfire X multiplayer: Free-to-play for everyone; optional add-ons include free and premium battle passes
  • Crossfire X Operation Catalyst campaign: Included with Game Pass subscription, or sold separately ($10)
  • Crossfire X Operation Specter campaign: Exclusive to Crossfire X Ultimate Package ($30)

However, Game Pass subscribers may want to wait for the Crossfire X campaign issue to sort itself out, as early impressions of the game's free-to-play multiplayer and campaign have not been favorable. This is due in part to a buggy launch, with players reporting issues with sliding, ADS, accessing skins earned from playing in the beta, and more. With a bit of patience, players should soon be able to check out the game's first campaign for no additional charge, then decide whether the rest is worth jumping into as well.

Crossfire X is available now on Xbox Series X and Xbox One, and the developers at Stove are aware of various bugs players have encountered so far. An update is planned for early March which will address some of these issues, as well as bring new maps. Among the problems players are currently experiencing is an aim-down-sights bug when using the CAR-4 that causes ADS to go in and out while shooting. Sliding is also not functioning correctly, with slides being stopped when hitting the side of an object. In addition, Stove states that the game's first update will "improve the experience of speed reduction while sliding" as well. Changes will come to the game's multiplayer "Boogieman" too. Being the Boogieman will become more difficult thanks to the planned removal of the Boogieman's health recovery and, a change that will prevent them from earning additional points. "These updates will take some time, but we are dedicated to including all of them in our first game update, which is planned for early March 2022," a post on the official Crossfire X website reads. The update is slated to bring "several" new maps to the game as well, which will be playable in both the game's Classic and Modern game modes. The team is also aware of beta reward skins not being distributed properly and is currently working on a fix, which will include additional "compensation" for affected players. It's unclear if players waiting on their beta rewards will need to wait until the game's planned March update, or if a fix will be coming sooner. Crossfire X includes both a multiplayer mode complete with multiple game types and a battle pass, as well as a single player campaign developed by Control-developer Remedy. The game, including the campaign, is playable via Xbox Game Pass, although there currently are reports of the campaign having not unlocked properly.
