Porsche Built A Hybrid In 1900 That You've Probably Never Seen 

The mainstream acceptance of hybrid-electric vehicles and their modernization are widely credited to Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota. The first mass-produced hybrid vehicle available for purchase in the United States was the first-generation Honda Insight two-door coupe, which debuted in 1999. In 2000, the Toyota Prius sedan followed suit. However, a young German engineer built the world's first functional hybrid car in 1900, long before Japanese automakers established a foothold in the HEV market. 

 

Modern electric vehicles can be traced back to 1886, and cars powered by steam, gasoline, or electricity were not uncommon in the early 1900s. Compared to equivalent gas- or steam-powered conveyances, early electric vehicles were quieter, safer, and smoother to operate, but they did have some drawbacks. Heavy batteries and costly charging infrastructure were needed for old electric vehicles. 

 

At the same time, the driving range was at best subpar, and the same problems still impede humanity's switch to electricity from fossil fuels. Ferdinand Porsche, then 25 years old, invented the S-E M P-E R V-I V U S, the world's first functional hybrid vehicle, in 1900. Which means "always alive" in Latin, stood out from the crowd at the 1901 Paris Motor Show

 

Ferdinand Porsche: Father of the hybrid car

S-E M P E-R V I-V U S by Porsche can be traced back to the 1898 E-G E-R C.2 Phaeton electric car. It had a five-horsepower octagonal electric motor and a top speed of about 15.5 mph (25 kilometers per hour). In 1899, Porsche joined the Austrian carriage manufacturer, L U D W-I K L O H N-E R & Co.

 

As Porsche envisioned a wheel-mounted electric motor with front-wheel drive, he attracted the attention of company founder L O H N E-R. He had the resources and industrial might to make this innovative design a reality because it eliminates the need to install a separate differential and transmission to turn the wheels. 

 

With two 2.5-horsepower electric motors and a top speed of 23 mph (27 kph), the first L O H N-E R Electron mobile debuted at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. The S-E M P-E R, an updated version with a brand-new range extender, was released shortly thereafter by Porsche. 

 

It was essentially a battery-powered electric car, but it also had a gasoline engine that turned a generator to charge the batteries. The genius hub-mounted electric motors of Porsche maintained forward and reverse thrust; the gas engine did not turn the driving wheels. The S- E M P-E R had an almost limitless driving range and was "always alive" as long as there was fuel in the tank

According to H-E N I-N G S, the S-M P-E R had two single-cylinder D-E D-I O N B O U T O N gas engines behind the driver's bench seat. It was riding on an EV chassis that Porsche used in race. Each could either drive a water pump to cool the gas engines or spin the generator, which would provide electricity for the motors in the wheel hubs. S-E M P-E R V-I V U S weighed approximately 2,640 pounds (1,200 kilograms) despite not having doors, a roof, or rear suspension. It also had 44 battery cells to reduce weight, whereas the Electric mobile, which was only electric, had 74 battery cells. The energy that was not required by the motors was stored in an accumulator for later use, and each gas engine and generator could produce 90 volts and 20 amperes. 

 

When he made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1901, we can only imagine how many people's jaws dropped when they first saw the world's first hybrid vehicle. Despite numerous modifications to the car's basic design, production of him and other iterations continued until 1915. Despite this, sales were poor. According to The Drive, its ride resembled that of a horse-drawn carriage because it lacked a rear axle or rear suspension. It had room for up to five adults to sit in it, but the gas engine and generator's smoke, oil, and other odors made it hard to enjoy
