Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse change. These contaminants can be in the form of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy (such as radioactivity, heat, sound, or light). It is important to note that while pollution can be caused by natural events, the term "pollution" generally refers to contaminants that have originated from human activities. These activities may include manufacturing, extractive industries, poor waste management, transportation, or agriculture. When discussing pollution, it is often categorised as either point-source or non-point-source pollution. Point-source pollution refers to contaminants that come from specific, highly concentrated sites such as factories or mines. On the other hand, nonpoint source pollution refers to contaminants that come from widespread sources such as microplastics or agricultural runoff. In the past, many sources of pollution were unregulated, particularly during the industrialization period of the 19th and 20th centuries. It was not until the latter half of the 20th century that environmental regulations and pollution policies began to emerge. However, even after the cessation of polluting activities, legacy pollution may persist in areas where historically polluting industries released persistent pollutants. Some of the major forms of pollution include air pollution, light pollution, litter, noise pollution, plastic pollution, soil contamination, radioactive contamination, thermal pollution, visual pollution, and water pollution. These various types of pollution have widespread consequences for both human and environmental health. They have a systematic impact on social and economic systems as well. Shedding light on the human toll of pollution, studies have shown that nine million people worldwide, equivalent to one in six deaths, died as a result of pollution in 2019. Shockingly, this number has remained unchanged since 2015, with air pollution contributing to three-quarters of the fatalities. A recent literature review conducted in 2022 further revealed that levels of anthropogenic chemical pollution have surpassed planetary boundaries, posing a threat to entire ecosystems globally. It is important to note that vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and marginalised communities, bear a disproportionate burden of the impacts caused by pollutants. This is due to the collocation of polluting industries and toxic waste sites in areas with less economic and political power. Consequently, this disparity serves as a crucial catalyst for the formation of the environmental justice movement and continues to fuel environmental conflicts, particularly in the Global South. Government policies at the local, national, and international levels have increasingly aimed to regulate pollutants. This has resulted in the establishment of air and water quality standards, as well as the regulation of specific waste streams. In most cases, regional and national environmental agencies or ministries are responsible for overseeing these policies, while international efforts are coordinated through entities like the UN Environmental Program and other treaty bodies. It is imperative to emphasise that pollution mitigation plays a vital role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and creating a sustainable future for all.
