What is Pegasus Spyware?
An Israeli company named NSO Group created Malware. In short, Malware is a type of software that has caused damage by entering our computers and mobile devices. The Malware that is used to spy is called spyware.
The most famous and powerful spyware is Pegasus Spyware which is created by an Israeli company. This spyware is named Pegasus spyware on a flying horse.
Pegasus is developed for spying on other countries as a tool to track criminals and terrorists. Israel said that it has been able to prevent many terrorist attacks with its help.
How does it work?
Pegasus spyware can exploits bugs in smartphones. It is designed to install easily in Android and IOS, even if it has the latest version of the Security System installed. It can be installed on mobile devices in the following ways:
- It previously infected the mobile devices of the targets by sending text messages or emails containing malicious links. It depended on the target clicking the link. This technique is called "spear-fishing
."
- But from 2019, it is advanced. It can be infected your mobile devices through a missed call on WhatsApp and could even delete the record of this missed call. You will not even know that you are being spied.
This spyware can also be installed over a wireless transceiver (like a radio transmitter and receiver) located near a target.
What can it do?
Once when a mobile device gets infected with this spyware. It takes all the access over of your mobile device.
- This spyware can track your location, tracing calls, reading text messages, and even making calls and sending messages to others from your device.
- It can also film the video with your phone's camera and record calls or conversations via the microphone.
- It can steal your photos and contacts and even steal your fingerprint, which could be misused.
However, this matter has come up now, but this matter is going on between 2017 to 2019. Some issues are :
- 2019: Social media app WhatsApp revealed that Pegasus had exploited a bug in its code to infect more than 1400 Android phones and iPhones, of which some were journalists and some human rights activists.
- July 2021: According to the Pegasus project, international investigation journalism (The Washington Post, The Guardian). Between 2017 to 2019, this spyware was installed in the phones of about 50,000 people. Out of 50,000, 300 phone numbers belong to people from India, of which 40 wear journalists, 3 opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, two ministers and some Supreme Court Judges, NGO's workers, and social workers/activists.
Can everyone use it?
No, everyone can't use it because the Israeli company markets it as a tool to track criminals and terrorists to prevent crimes and terrorist attacks, not for mass surveillance.
This spyware is given to the Government of the country only by the NSO Group. It is not for private companies or individuals.
Pegasus has been given to about 40 countries, including India. It is also expensive. Around spying per person costs 1 crore plus. Also says that spying about 50 people = 60 crores.
Whether the government can get anyone spying? Should I do it or not?
To protect and maintain the country's integrity, the government has the right to spy on anyone. The government has said that it has not been misused. Logically, it would have been helped in the surgical strike.
