How Ola takes on a half-billion-dollar debt to fund its food-delivery and fast-commerce ambitions.

The money was raised under the Term Loan B (TLB) mechanism, according to the company. TBL is a term loan provided by institutional investors with the primary purpose of maximizing their long-term total returns.

In a press release, the company stated that it will use the term loan to expand its businesses, which include ride-hailing, vehicle commerce, food delivery, rapid commerce, and financial services.

The Khichdi Experiment, The Biryani Experiment, The Paratha Experiment, and The Daily Dinner are some of Ola's food brands. With the debut of Ola Stores earlier this month, it also entered the fast grocery delivery market.

 

In a news release, Bhavish Aggarwal, ANI Technologies' founder, and CEO said, "We are speeding our journey toward establishing the New Mobility ecosystem to assist a billion people to travel sustainably.

Customers will be able to choose from almost 2,000 products across a variety of categories, including food, drinks, home, and personal care, and pet care. According to the reports, they will be delivered from dark businesses strategically located throughout the city.

According to RedSeer research, India's fast commerce sector is predicted to increase from $0.3 billion to $5 billion by 2025.

Trends such as a shift in consumer behavior from value to convenience, which has resulted in weekly, small-sized purchases rather than larger, monthly purchases; big players such as BigBasket and Grofers; and the rise of instant delivery platforms, which have allowed consumers to complete top-up/unplanned (on-demand) purchases within an hour of ordering.

On a standalone basis (ride-hailing business), the company announced its first operating profit of Rs 89.82 crore in 2020-21, with revenues of Rs 689 crore. Ola's operational loss narrowed to Rs 429.20 crore on a consolidated basis in FY21, but revenue fell 63 percent to Rs 983.15 crore (including food and financial services businesses).

Ola, a ride-hailing business backed by SoftBank Group, announced on Thursday that it has secured a $500 million loan from foreign institutional investors as it prepares to go public next year.

Ola, which competes with Uber Technologies for a majority of India's ride-hailing business, wants to raise up to $1 billion through an initial public offering.

The Bengaluru-based firm announced in July that it had received $500 million in an IPO round sponsored by Temasek and Warburg. Other existing investors, like as Temasek Holdings, Warburg Pincus, Japan's SoftBank, and others, are expected to participate in the fundraising, according to press sources.
