In 2016, Finnish company HMD Global bought a part of Microsoft's feature phone business and has a licensing agreement that allows it to make smartphones under the Nokia brand.

Android Go is half-baked

As the launch of the next Jio Phone (literally called 'Next') draws nearer, the entry-level budget smartphone segment is set for a major shakeup. It is speculated that the Jio Phone Next could be launched with Android Go, the watered-down version of Android, which has only been seen on very few smartphones launched over the past few years. While Android Go was introduced with the intent of bringing Android to sub-Rs. 5,000 devices with 1GB of RAM or less in 2018, it did not really take off in India. Now, in 2021, it makes little sense especially on a smartphone that's priced closer to Rs. 10,000.

Nokia C20 Plus Summary

The Nokia C20 Plus aims to deliver the basics with entry-level hardware and Android Go, but it fails when it comes to execution. The phone’s design is practical and sturdy but it is also quite chunky, and not ideal for one-handed use. The Unisoc processor can barely hold things together even with 3GB of RAM on the higher-priced variant, so the software experience is sluggish. The stripped-down Android Go software seems half-baked at best, given that there are just a handful of current Go-branded Google apps and some third-party lite apps from the Play Store that help save on space. The Go apps are clunky and are not as capable as their regular Android counterparts. Making things worse are the cameras, which deliver below-average image and video quality. T

hankfully the battery keeps up but takes about 3.5 hours to charge to 100 percent.

HMD Global is pitching the Nokia 5.4 to content creators who want “cinema-grade” camera tools without having to spend a whole lot. It's powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC, but despite not having any bloatware, the 4GB vatiant that I had didn't offer a very smooth experience. The 6.39-inch panel has decent viewing angles, and colour reproduction is adequate but the display resolution is just HD+, which is disappointing for a phone costing nearly Rs. 14,000.

Software is one area that is hard to find fault with on Nokia smartphones. It's stock Android 10 with just Google's suite of apps, a support app from HMD Global, and a Cinema editor extension in the Google Photos app for colour grading H-Log videos. The Nokia 5.4 has a 4,000mAh battery, which I found to be enough to get me through one full day of heavy use, and even the next day if my usage was frugal.
