How natural disasters affect the world

Natural occurrences in weather cycles are climate hazards. Hurricanes, droughts, wildfires, flooding, and strong winds have always been here. However, we are currently witnessing a brand-new and terrifying scale of destruction.

Cyclone Idai, deadly heatwaves in India, Pakistan, and Europe, and flooding in southeast Asia are just a few of the devastating climate disasters that have occurred in the last year. As a result of more dangerous and frequent extreme weather events, millions of people have already lost their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones from Mozambique to Bangladesh.

 

What is the reason for the severe weather?

Simply put, shifts in the global climate increase the likelihood of extreme weather events and exacerbate climate hazards. Sea levels rise as a result of higher temperatures in the air and water, more intense and prolonged droughts and wildfire seasons, heavier precipitation, and flooding. The results are devastating and the evidence is overwhelming:

 In the last 30 years, the number of disasters caused by climate change has tripled. Sea levels rose at a rate 2.5 times faster than it had been for nearly the entire 20th century between 2006 and 2016. Climate change forces more than 20 million people to leave their homes each year. By 2030, developing nations will spend $140-300 billion annually on climate change adaptation and recovery, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. The number of people killed by natural disasters can vary a lot from year to year; Before a major disaster strikes, a few years pass with few fatalities. Each year, natural disasters have claimed the lives of approximately 45,000 people worldwide on average over the past decade. This accounts for roughly 1% of all deaths worldwide.

 

The annual variation in the number and percentage of deaths caused by natural disasters over the past few decades can be seen in the visualizations presented here. What we see is that over many years, the number of deaths can be very low, often less than 10,000 and only 0.01% of the total number of deaths. However, shock events also have devastating effects: Ethiopia's famine and drought from 1983 to 1985; the 2004 tsunami and earthquake in the Indian Ocean; Myanmar was struck by cyclone Nargis in 2008; and the Haitian earthquake of 2010 in Port-au-Prince. Over 200,000 people died worldwide as a result of these events—more than 0.4 percent of all deaths in these years.

Events with a low frequency but a high impact, like earthquakes and tsunamis, cannot be added, but the high death toll is. Based on historical data, earlier predictions, more resilient infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and response systems have significantly reduced disaster deaths worldwide. People with low incomes are frequently the most susceptible to disasters: The key to preventing deaths from natural disasters in the coming decades is raising living standards, infrastructure, and response systems in these regions.

 

We are constantly reminded of the most recent catastrophe thanks to almost instantaneous updates on the world's events. Although these accounts are obviously significant, they do not provide us with any insight into how the consequences of disasters have evolved over time. In the context of previous years, it is difficult for the majority of us to determine whether a particular year was particularly deadly. We have developed a Natural Disasters Data Explorer that provides estimates of fatalities, displaced people, and economic damage for each nation since 1900 in order to better comprehend the devastating impact of disasters today and in the past. The information for this comes from EM-DAT; a project that builds these extremely detailed histories of disasters2. In this visualization, I show how the global picture has changed over the past century. At the top, it displays the estimated annual death toll from all disasters, followed by a breakdown by type. The number of deaths for that year as a whole is represented by the bubble's size.

 

The majority of the years with the highest death tolls have been marked. Typically, the follow-up question is prompted by this: Why? Which event took place?” As a result, I've also noted significant occurrences that were a factor in most, if not all, of that year's fatalities. For instance, the worldwide death toll from storms in 2008 was estimated to be around 141,000. According to the chart, 138,366 of these deaths occurred in Myanmar as a result of Cyclone Margis.

We can see that during the 20th century, it was common to have years with millions of deaths. Most of the time, this was brought on by severe droughts or floods. These frequently resulted in famines. Here, my colleague Joe Hasell examines the extensive history of famines. The world has not seen a death toll of this magnitude in many decades thanks to improvements in the national and international response, improved food security, and resilience to other disasters. Today's famines are typically brought on by political unrest and civil war.

The majority of the time, disasters result in between 10,000 and 20,000 deaths. This can reach tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands during the most fatal years, which typically coincide with major cyclones or earthquakes. Disasters have not decreased in intensity or frequency as a result of this trend. It indicates that today's world is much better at preventing disaster-related deaths than it was in the past. As we respond to and adapt to climate change, this will become increasingly significant.
