How much do jet engine cost?

A well-researched and robust engine design is essential for powering aircraft that lift passengers and cargo off the ground and fly long distances. Manufacturers of jet engines do not publicly advertise the list prices of their products. However, the price of the motor is highly dependent on the size and requirements of the motor. Although the list price of the engine is available, the actual price paid by the customer varies widely and is negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Small Engines Piston engines used on small general aviation aircraft such as the Cessna 172 cost between $40,000 and $70,000. Such engines are relatively low power fixed pitch engines (similar to the engine of large cars). Such engines cost between $700,000 and $1.5 million. Small turbojet engines in a similar range that power business jets such as the Gulfstream G650 cost between $1.5 million and $3.5 million per unit. While most business jets of this size carry 18-28 passengers, the aviation mission requires fuel-efficient engines. Mid-sized engines Mid-sized turbocharged engines, such as the Pratt & Whitney PW1500G and CFM International LEAP, are much larger and significantly more complex in design and functionality. Such engines are high-powered for aircraft with a capacity of 100-200 passengers, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. Such engines cost somewhere between 10 and 15 million dollars. Large engines The large turbojet engines that power some of the largest airliners, including the Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and Airbus A380, are much larger and more complex. With high performance requirements, such engines can cost between 25 and 45 million dollars. The world's largest commercial engine, the General Electric GE9X (not yet in service with the Boeing 777X), comes in at a whopping $42 million. While the cost of typical military jet engines is rarely disclosed, Raytheon's Pratt & Whitney was awarded a Naval Air Systems Command contract worth up to $8 billion in June 2022 to power 178 F-35 fighter jets. Since the contract amount is used only for the cost of the engines, this works out to almost $45 million per engine. Why are jet engines expensive? Complex designs and complex testing are two key factors that define the cost of a jet engine. Current motors must be light, robust, economical and safe, all at the same time. With operating temperatures reaching 2,700 degrees F (1,500 degrees C), jet engines use expensive heat-resistant superalloys. To put things into perspective, a ton of carbon steel costs around $500, while a specialized nickel-chromium superalloy can cost nearly $50,000 per ton. In addition, the tight machining and small tolerances make jet engines complex and time-consuming. Jet engines undergo certification for operation in extreme environmental conditions and operation in a test chamber and on a test bed (test aircraft). An average turbocharged engine may require up to 10,000 engine flight cycles (EFC) during certification testing.
