Microsoft is an American Multinational Technology corporation which produces computer software, electronics, personal computers, and other services. It's best known for its OS and the Internet Explorer. Wait, Who doesn't know about Microsoft these days? However, let me brief about it and its strategy to beat its competition to become one of the best ever MNC's.
EARLY DAYS OF MICROSOFT
Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen on April 4,1975. It rose to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by Microsoft Windows.
Gates and Allen started Microsoft—originally called Micro-Soft, for microprocessors and software—in order to produce software for the Altair 8800, an early personal computer. Allen had quit his job as a programmer in Boston and Gates left Harvard University, where he was a student, to focus on their new company, which was based in Albuquerque because the city was home to electronics firm MATS, maker of the Altair 8800. By the end of 1978, Microsoft’s sales topped more than $1 million and in 1979 the business moved its headquarters to Bellevue, Washington, a suburb of Seattle, where Gates and Allen grew up. The company went on to license its MS-DOS operating system to IBM for its first personal computer, which debuted in 1981. Afterward, other computer companies started licensing MS-DOS, which had no graphical interfaces and required users to type in commands in order to open a program. In 1983, Allen departed Microsoft after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma; he was successfully treated for the disease and went on to pursue a variety of other business ventures.
RISE OF MICROSOFT AND HOW IT BEATS THEIR COMPETITIONS
By 1985,due to the revenue it has through the MS-DOS license, Microsoft hit around 140million dollars. In 1986 Microsoft stock goes public and then for a while Bill Gates became the youngest Billionaire back then.
Then in August 1989,Microsoft launches the earliest version of office suit applications which then became the standard usage of businesses across America. Followed by that, the tech giant launches Microsoft 3.0 which had a big leap into GUI(Graphical User Interface) which made it accessible to the common people of the country. In the following years, 90% of the people had been using Microsoft OS.
Parallelly, the internet started shaping and started to rise. In the early period of 1990s, there was a rise of internet browsing. At that time, a revolutionary browser named NETSCAPE was way ahead than any other internet browsing feature by giving the option to download multiple files and also support JPEG image formats. Web browsing became the essential thing, more than the operating system itself. Soon, NETSCAPE had become a Billion-dollar company by 1994. The shock here is that the Billion-dollar company started to fall by 1995. The reason being Microsoft as they launched Microsoft-95 in which they used three principles: Embrace, Extend, Exterminate
Embrace:They started their own web browsing called the Internet Explorer and made it their default browser
Extend: Microsoft directly attacked their rivals NETSCAPE by launching something called ActiveX which made it impossible to download Microsoft Office files when using Netscape
Exterminate:Above of that, Internet Explorer had better features with free of cost whereas Netscape charged $49 for every subscription which eventually made people to use Microsoft's product than their rivals
Another example where Microsoft beat their another rival is the messenger feature where Microsoft launched MSN messenger to overshadow their rival's AOL instant messenger by using the Embrace, Extend, Exterminate principles.
TAKEAWAYS:
Like Microsoft, Entrepreneurs must Embrace the products of their rivals & make sure their product gives a better ROI(Return of Investment)
