How Marvel Studios Reportedly Pays VFX Artists 20% Less Than Other Studios

VFX-IATSE is a VFX vendor "race to the bottom"

The VFX industry is a rapidly growing sector. In the past decade, the number of visual effects workers has grown exponentially. But most VFXers are not represented by a union. Their employer does not provide them with the protections offered by a union. That's a problem, and it's something the VFX-IATSE hopes to address.

For most of its history, the VFX industry has been dominated by seven major studios, with a few smaller shops. However, a rash of VFX pop-up shops is affecting the market, too. When these new shops open, the VFX industry becomes even more fragmented. While some VFX artists are freelancers, many others are employed directly by the studios. As a result, the competition between these smaller vendors is fierce.

But with a VFX-IATSE, these unionized artists can get more leverage against their employers. Currently, the biggest studios are resistant to the idea of unionizing their VFX staff. They argue that the union would require more money from their pockets. And the risk of a strike is too great.

However, many VFXers have been forced to work illegal overtime and long hours. They've also complained about punishing deadlines. Even though they're supposedly working 60-plus hours a week, some VFXers are forced to work eight-hour shifts. This, in addition to the cost of rent in high-cost VFX markets, makes it difficult for these artists to live comfortably.

Despite this, VFX-IATSE has begun to recruit more members. It has an ambitious goal of achieving 1000 members by the fall of this year. One of its organizers, Arun Devasia, says, "We've got to stop the VFX race to the bottom."

The VFX-IATSE survey compared salaries, working conditions, and pay rates for contract and staff VFXers. With IATSE's institutional clout, it was a first of its kind. By the end of the year, the union plans to publish the results.

VFX-IATSE, however, isn't just about labor. The group is also interested in improving the filmmaking community and its relationship with the studios. Some members are producers and editors, and other workers are coordinators. These people have to keep the various parties informed and answer questions. Organizing a union can help a group of workers understand the nuances of the industry, as well as gain a collective voice.

VFX-IATSE wants to see the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) recognize the union. AMPTP is currently a separate organization, but IATSE has had a tumultuous history of fighting to get recognized by Disney and other Hollywood studios.

VFX-IATSE is not the only union trying to address the problem. Other unions include Bectu in the U.K. and the Motionographers Union in the U.S. Since its inception, the VFX-IATSE has been promoting a union, but it has not yet reached the point of real action.

If a VFX union does form, it will have a huge impact on the VFX industry. It will give these workers more power against their employers, and it will give a voice to the workers in the VFX industry.
