St Asaph was merely a typical north Wales town a few months ago. But in 2012, the Queen decided to grant city status to three communities in the United Kingdom in honour of her Diamond Jubilee. Thanks to good fortune, all 3,500 citizens of St Asaph can now call the city home. With only 1,800 citizens, St. David's in south Wales continues to be the smallest city in the United Kingdom.
Just 800 people live in Vatican City, which is 0.17 square miles in size and is part of Rome. Vatican City is a fortified enclave that dates back a long way, but it wasn't until 1929 that it gained independence.

The majority of people on Earth now reside in cities for the first time in history. Though most column inches are devoted to Asian megacities, there are vast differences in what constitutes a metropolis. This piece may be seen as the antidote to yesterday's list, which included five of the "biggest" cities in the world. These are five of the "smallest" in the world.

Adamstown – the world’s least populated capital city
The Pitcairn Islands are located in the southern Pacific Ocean and have a population of only 48. That makes the islands the least-populated jurisdiction on the planet and home to the world’s least populated capital city, in which all 48 of the island’s residents live. Almost all residents descend from the crew of the HMS Bounty – a British merchant vessel that settled on the islands in 1790.
