How many refugees will the UK take?
On Tuesday the UK expanded access to Ukrainian refugees seeking to join family members in Britain.
The first phase of the program allowed Ukrainians who had close family members in the UK to come and join them, but the move was criticized for being too restrictive as it did not involve UK parents, siblings and grandparents.
But during our visit to Poland, where most of the refugees had flocked, Mr. Johnson promised to do more.
He said people living in the UK would now be allowed to bring "older parents, grandparents, children over the age of 18 and siblings" more than those previously allowed.
An official spokesman for the Prime Minister said that would increase eligibility for the estimated 200,000 people, more than double the previously estimated figure.
"What we're going to do is expand the family plan so that the larger number fits ... you'll be talking about a few hundred thousand, maybe more," Mr. Johnson said. He also unveiled a new program to help people. that allows UK companies and citizens to support individual Ukrainian people to come to the UK.
Home Affairs Secretary Priti Patel said the grant program "will open the way to the UK for Ukrainian people who may not have family ties with the UK but who are able to get along with people, charities, businesses and community groups".
It is not yet clear how many refugees will be supported in this way, although Ms Patel said there would be no numerical restrictions for those eligible. What are other countries doing?
Poland provides accommodation for many Ukrainian refugees, allowing entry even for those without valid passports.
The country has so far displaced more than 377,000 refugees, according to the UN.
The Polish government says that another 50,000 people come every day.
Warsaw has opened 332 miles (535km) in Ukraine, providing food and health care, as well as a place to relax and receive information.
It is also preparing a medical train to transport wounded Ukrainians, and has drawn a list of 1,230 hospitals that will send them to Hungary and Romania to provide food and clothing subsidies. Children are given places in local schools.
The Czech Republic has implemented its Transport Wave Preparation Program. This will enable refugees to apply for a special type of visa through a simplified procedure to stay, if required.
The European Union (EU) is preparing to relax its immigration laws and says its member states will welcome refugees "with open arms".
It has prioritized plans to allow all Ukrainian refugees to enter for up to three years without the need to first apply for asylum.
They will also have social welfare and access to housing, treatment and education for children.
Official proposals for the move, which require the implementation of the 2001 Temporary Protection Directive, will be presented to the interior ministers on Thursday. But measures may be approved.
The US said it was providing emergency aid but suggested that Europe should be the first refugee destination.
Last week White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Biden was "really ready" to welcome refugees from Ukraine but said most would like to stay in Europe so they could return home easily once the war is over.
