Marvel and Disney have announced that the new global cume for Avengers: Endgame was $ 2.7892 billion in raw grosses. That puts it $ 500,000 away from the $ 2.7897 billion global cume of James Cameron's Avatar during its theatrical release in 2009 and 2010. Yes, both movies have had their totals slightly adjusted upwards to reflect unreported or under-reported earnings. With Avengers: Endgame, it's the regular business / auditing that occurs at the end of every major theatrical release (it's how Warner Bros.'s Rampage crawled past the $ 100 million domestic mark last year). For Avatar, it's about reissue grosses overseas over the years that should have been added to the till.
Disney espect to earn that additional $ 500,000 by tomorrow. And there it is. Thanks to a quasi-reissue that put the film back into 2,000 theaters just prior to July 4th weekend, some previously unreported overseas grosses (which is par for the course as a movie ends its theatrical run), ten years of domestic inflation and overseas expansion and a ridiculous over-performance in China, Avengers: Endgame has done the seemingly impossible.
Marvel and Walt Disney used the occasion of the San Diego Comic Con panel tonight to “call it.” Yes, Avengers: Endgame has passed the $ 2.788 billion global gross of Avatar to become the biggest-grossing movie of all time in raw worldwide grosses. The big factor in Avengers 4 passing Avatar at the global box office was its huge grosses in China. Avengers: Infinity War earned $ 679 million domestic, $ 359 million in China and $ 2.048 billion worldwide.Avengers: Endgame earned 26% more ($ 855 million) in North America and, sans China, around 29% more overseas than to Infinity War. But it earned an insane $ 629 million in China alone, which was a 75% jump from Infinity War. Had the film merely jumped the "average" 29% in China as well, we were considering looking at a $ 463 million Chinese gross and an otherwise sad / shameful $ 2.638 billion global cume for the MCU epic.
