The game football has the most spectators across the world. In the 1920 summer Olympics, the world’s first intercontinental football competition was held and contested by 13 European nations and Egypt. The final match was between the host Belgium and Czechoslovakia, who participated for the first time. During the match at 39th minute, when Belgium led the scorecard 2-0, Czechs walked off from the field protesting the officiating, which made them disqualified from the tournament; the host who played against them became the tournament winner. Following the 1920 summer Olympics, two more football tournaments in Olympics were held in 1924 and 1928, and those were won by the South American team Uruguay. From the year 1924, FIFA’s professional era started. FIFA decided to organize a separate tournament for football as in the Olympics game; only amateur players were allowed to participate in the tournament, which did not show the full and true strength of the nations.
FIRST WORLD CUP
The first world cup tournament for this game was started in the year 1930, and it was held in Uruguay. Only thirteen nations: seven South American nations, two North American nations, and four European nations took part in the first world cup, which was hosted by Uruguay. The first World Cup final was viewed by 93000 people in Montevideo, Uruguay at Estadio Centenario Stadium and won by Uruguay's host team, which defeated Argentina 4-2 and lifted the first World Cup.

There were some issues for participating in the 1938 World Cup regarding intercontinental travel and war threatens. From South America, only Brazil and Cuba were taken part in the tournament. The rest of South American nations other than these two and whole North American nations did not participate in the tournament. Fifteen nations participated in the tournament, including three non- European nations: Brazil, Cuba, and Dutch East Indies. The final was played between Italy and Hungary at the Stade Olympique Colombes stadium in Paris, France. Italy yet again lifted the trophy for the second time by defeating Hungary 4-2.
FOURTH WORLD CUP
Due to the Second World War, the planned World Cup tournaments were canceled in 1942 and 1946. The fourth edition of the World Cup was held in the year 1950, and it was hosted by Brazil. This tournament did not have any knock-out matches. Only thirteen teams were taken part in the fourth World Cup tournament. India and France, though they were qualified for the World Cup, they withdrew from it. The participating nations were divided into four groups, and the top of the table from each group was qualified for the final round. Uruguay, Brazil, Sweden, and Spain were qualified to play the final round. In that, Uruguay topped the table and clinched the title for the second time.
FIFTH WORLD CUP
The fifth edition of the World Cup was held in Switzerland in the year 1954. West Germany made history defeating Hungary 3-2 in the final became Champions for the first time.
SIXTH WORLD CUP
The sixth World Cup was hosted by Sweden in 1958. Brazil won the first World Cup title by beating the host nation, Sweden, 5-2.
SEVENTH WORLD CUP
The South American nation Chile hosted the seventh World Cup in 1962. Brazil defended the champion title by defeating Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final.
EIGHTH WORLD CUP
The host nation, England, lifted the 1966 World Cup for the first time in their history by defeating West Germany in the final at the extra time as the two of them were scored 2-2 in the full time of 90 minutes. In the extra time, England scored two more goals to lift the trophy.
NINTH WORLD CUP
Brazil became the Champions for the third time in the year 1970 after defeating World Cup winner Italy in the final 4-1. The tournament was held in Mexico.
TENTH WORLD CUP
West Germany and Netherlands were the finalists in the 1974 World Cup, hosted by West Germany. The host lifted the World Cup for the second time by beating Netherlands 2-1.
ELEVENTH WORLD CUP
The Netherlands reached the final of the 1978 World Cup for the second time consecutively, but unluckily they were beaten by Argentina's host nation. They were scored each one goal in the full time. In the extra time, Argentina scored two goals and lifted the Trophy for the first time.
TWELFTH WORLD CUP
The twelfth edition of the World Cup tournament was hosted by Spain in 1982. Totally 24 teams participated in the tournament. Previously 16 teams were allowed to take part. Italy had won the trophy for the third time after defeating West Germany 3-1.
THIRTEENTH WORLD CUP
Mexico hosted the tournament for the second time in the year 1986. In the thrilling final played between Argentina and West Germany, Argentina won it with a scorecard of 3-2.
FOURTEENTH WORLD CUP
Once and again, the two nations: West Germany and Argentina, were played in the final of the fourteenth World Cup in 1990, hosted by Italy. This time West Germany gave the counter to Argentina by defeating them 1-0.
FIFTEENTH WORLD CUP
Brazil became Champions by defeating Italy in the penalty shootouts 3-2 in the 1994 World Cup final. The United States hosted the tournament.
SIXTEENTH WORLD CUP
For the second time, France hosted the 1998 World Cup tournament. The host country defeated the South American giant and four-time World champions, Brazil, 3-0.
SEVENTEENTH WORLD CUP
South Korea and Japan, two nations, jointly hosted the tournament. 32 teams were allowed to participate in it. The two giants Brazil and Germany battled each other in the final of the 2002 World Cup. Brazil won the battle and lifted the World Cup for the fifth time. For Germany, it was the fourth defeat in the World Cup finals.
EIGHTEENTH WORLD CUP
Germany hosted the World Cup in the year 2006. Italy beat France in the final by penalty shoots out and became the champions for the fourth time.
NINETEENTH WORLD CUP
In 2010, Spain first became the champions by defeating three times the finalist Netherland in the World Cup. The tournament was hosted in South Africa. At the extra time, Spain managed to score one goal to lift the World Cup for the first time.
TWENTIETH WORLD CUP
For the fifth time in South America and the second time in Brazil, the 2014 World Cup was hosted. The European giant Germany had beaten Argentina 1-0 in the extra time and lifted the World Cup for the fourth time.
TWENTY-FIRST WORLD CUP
2018 World Cup was hosted in Russia. France and Croatia fought each other in the final. France registered their remarkable 4-2 win to become the second time World Cup winner in history.
