How many children are good for life?

According to the results of the Millennium Development Goals:

"The world is in danger of not achieving the targets set out in the Millennium Development Goals for eradicating poverty and reducing inequalities by 2015." (http://www.cdc.gov/socialstat/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/IMF_Goal_1_Post.pdf)

The reason we have to do this is because if we are not making progress, poverty, diseases, hunger and inequality will rise.

The UN's report on how we are going to achieve the SDGs says:

"Progress on the Millennium Development Goals requires policy changes at national and international levels. The introduction of high-quality targeted investment programmes in the social and economic sectors (eg nutrition, water, education, health) would deliver large gains and improve the prospects for poverty reduction and inclusive growth. Similarly, strengthened investment in infrastructure and environmental management should enhance access to education and jobs."

If we cannot make progress in either reducing child poverty or reducing inequality, it is unlikely that we will make much progress in meeting our SDGs.

I want to be able to answer this question with confidence. How many children are good for life? According to the UN's children's fund:

The estimated number of children in poverty worldwide in 2015, assuming the most optimistic scenario of all countries meeting the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030:

Six hundred and one million, representing 26% of the total children in poverty.

According to the FAO:

"The majority of children in all countries are in poverty. Two-thirds of the world's poor are in the developing countries of the world (http://www.fao.org/fafo/en/children-in-extreme-poverty-2016-3051)

"According to the World Bank, the percentage of the global poor fell from 26.7% of the population in 2000 to 19.3% of the population in 2012. But these numbers are grossly understated. The World Bank indicates that an additional 130 million people fell into poverty over this period, meaning the poverty rate is between 21% and 25% in 2015."

I hope we can reduce child poverty to 10%. We will need Poverty reduction programmes: We need poverty reduction programmes. A good example of a poverty reduction programme is 'Unicef' poverty reduction programmes. The UN's poverty reduction strategy says:

"We need a comprehensive approach and effective support from the global community to get children out of poverty by 2030, including reduction of global poverty, improvement in governance, including higher rates of sustainable economic growth, continued growth in health care, education and social protection programmes, improvement in gender equality and access to reproductive health services."

I want to be able to answer this question with confidence. How many children are good for life? Based on the UN's projections of child poverty and inequality, I want us to reduce child poverty to less than 5%.
