When has Manchester United ever fallen.?
After nearly 3 decades of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United were expected to undergo a transition period of at least 10 years.
Each manager who has come in After Sir Alex Ferguson, has had a role to play in the transition:
David; The first manager to come in after Sir Alex Ferguson, was always doomed to fail. Everyone knew it, the club knew it. And I think David was chosen for that purpose because he would be cheaper to sack. I just feel bad for because he was used and, his confidence was down for many years because of that one job. Other managers like Ancelotti and Pep were intelligent enough to turn down that offer, as attractive as it was.
Louis van : He was brought in to clean David's mess. Cleaning Sir Alex Ferguson's mess would have looked bad on any manager. The board would have been bashed by the fans for destroying a good team. LVG wasn't hired to win trophies. He had started winning, but they sacked him anyway. They wanted him to clean out the squad and any Ferguson mentality. He was assured/given enough funds to buy players. He did that and got sacked after. He also had a responsibility to train a Manchester United player, Ryan Gigs, into a world-class manager.
José Mourinho: Now, it was a new squad and Manchester United needed a manager who can bring a winning mentality to this team. Gigs wasn't ready and was giving the club an ultimate, hire him, or he walks. The administration waved him goodbye and looked at serious options. What better option than Mourinho.? He brought a winning and competitive mentality to the team quickly and acquired some world-class players. He was also forced to do something, train one of their own (Michael) as a manager. He did his job and once the club was satisfied, he was sacked.
Micheal wasn't ready, but looked promising. They wanted to handle him carefully, so they brought in an interim manager, Solskjaer, as they discuss how to go forward. But Solskjaer beat their expectations and having fit all the ticks (one of their own, plays attacking football, always smart and takes the academy seriously), he was hired.
And he's performing well. If he fails, Michael looks ready to take the reins.
So basically, Manchester United is 2 years ahead of schedule. That doesn't look like a downfall to me.
As much as it may seem like a conspiracy theory, if you read between the lines of what has happened, it kind of adds up.
To reiterate Simon answer, it is pretty much down to money. United acquired new owners who took ridiculous sums of money out of the club, whereas City acquired new owners who put ridiculous sums of money in to the club.
United have still spent an eye watering amount on players, however this was after the owners had already let the squad decline, so were essentially playing to catch up. The catch-up coincided with Sir Alex leaving which compounded the misery and United have pretty much been mediocre since and probably will be until new owners come in. United need owners who can clear the debt created by the owners and put every last penny of the income United make in to training facilities, coaching as well as the playing squad and a clear direction and will to win. The owners essentially use United as a cash cow and are more than happy with top 4 league positions to keep the money rolling in (hence why they were at the forefront of the Premier League movement for the European Super League).
