How long is bone marrow donation recovery?

First of all, we have to know; what is bone marrow and where it is located? In the cancellous or spongy portions of bones, there is a semi-solid tissue called bone marrow. It is the main site of hematopoiesis or new blood cell production in mammals and birds. It is a collection of marrow adipose tissue, hematopoietic cells, and supportive storm cells. It is mainly located in the breastbone, vertebrae, ribs, and bones of the pelvis in adult humans. In healthy human adults, it consists of approximately 5% of total body mass. For example, if a person weighs 161 lbs (73 kg), the bone marrow will have to be upto 8 lbs (3.65 kg).

Bone marrow causes inherent and environmental factors, exposure to toxic drugs, radiation, infection, poisons, malignancy, environmental chemicals, certain viruses like HIV, hepatitis, some herpes, and retroviruses. The other causes of bone marrow are suppressed immune system or plasma disorder, Smoking and obesity, previous chemotherapy.

 

 

 After detecting the main causes of bone marrow, one has to find a healthy donor for donating bone marrow. There is a common misconception about bone marrow donors that it is dangerous to donate blood stem cells, but actually very risky are there for donating blood stem cells. Donors should be carefully examined to safeguard that they are healthy and ready to give blood stems and the process is safe. For this procedure, the donor immune system should remain strong. Patients have to match someone of the same racial background because of their genetic type. Special blood tests have to be done before a person receives an allotransplantation.

 

 

Bone marrow donation can be done through collecting blood creating cells for the bone marrow transplant. It is a surgical process in a hospital operating room in which doctors use spines to extract liquid marrow by making two small holes in the backbone of the pelvic. During the process of donation, anaesthesia is given and feels no ache to the donor. Painkillers may be needed for the next few days.

Bone marrow donor recovery times will depend on the factors of individuals and the type of donation. Bone marrow donors should assume to get back to their normal activities within 1 to 7 days. Usually, to get back to a normal daily routine for bone marrow donation is 7 to 20 days. Donor safety is considered a top priority after donating bone marrow and examining them until they come to their normal activities. During this stage of recovery, they feel uneasiness like headaches, bruising for a week or a few days, fatigue, and back pain. It is important to keep the donor's immune systems strong enough, and their blood stem cells restock themselves in about 1 to 2 months.
