Such a machine, Asada says, might in the long run lead to robots that can apprehend the pain of others, a treasured ability for robots designed to help care for elderly human beings, for instance.
But there may be an essential difference between a robotic that responds in a predictable way to a painful thump and a robotic that’s able to approximate an inner feeling, says Antonio Damasio, a neuroscientist additionally at the University of Southern California.
