Research in science can be classified as either fundamental or applied. Basic research is the pursuit of knowledge, whereas applied research is the pursuit of practical applications of this knowledge. The majority of knowledge originates from basic research, however occasionally applied research focuses on particular practical issues. This results in technical advancements that were unthinkable in the past.

In contrast to a hypothesis, a theory often covers the behavior of much larger sets of observations; frequently, many hypotheses can be logically connected by a single theory. A theory is therefore a hypothesis that explains a number of other hypotheses. The formulation of theories follows many of the same scientific criteria as that of hypotheses in this regard. Scientists may develop models, make attempts to represent observations logically, physically, or mathematically, and come up with novel theories that may be put to the test through experimentation.

On both sides of scientific arguments, there may also be a political or ideological bias present. Research may occasionally be referred to as "bad science," which refers to well-intentioned but inaccurate, out-of-date, incomplete, or oversimplified expositions of scientific concepts. The phrase "scientific misconduct" describes actions by researchers such as purposefully misrepresenting their published data or giving the incorrect person credit for a discovery.

Thomas Kuhn stated that the act of observation and judgment occurs within a paradigm, a "portrait" of the world that is logically consistent and congruent with the observations drawn from it. He defined revolutionary science as the taking over of one paradigm by another in a paradigm shift, as opposed to the process of observation and "puzzle solving" that takes place within a paradigm.[209] Each paradigm has unique concerns, objectives, and interpretations. Setting two or more "portraits" up against the outside world and selecting the most promising one is how paradigms are chosen. A paradigm shift happens when a sizable number of observable abnormalities appear in the previous paradigm and are explained by the new paradigm.

 

A network of cooperating scientists who do scientific research makes up the scientific community. The community is made up of smaller organizations that are engaged in science. Peer review, debate, and discussion in journals and conferences help scientists keep the standard of their research methods and their objectivity when interpreting the findings.

Scientists have a great desire to use their understanding of the world to improve health, societies, the environment, or certain industries. Prestige and peer recognition are two more reasons. Many scientists today[220] seek professions in a variety of economic sectors, including academia, industry, government, and nonprofit settings, and hold advanced degrees in a scientific field.[221][222]

 

With significant exceptions, science has traditionally been a male-dominated field. Much like in other aspects of male-dominated civilizations, women in science suffered significant discrimination. For instance, women were regularly excluded from job openings and given little credit for their contribution.

Awards in science are typically given to people or groups that have significantly advanced their field. They are frequently presented by esteemed organizations, therefore receiving one is regarded as a significant honor for a scientist. Since the early Renaissance, medals, cash, and titles have been frequently given to scientists. Awarded annually to those who have made scientific advances in the areas of medicine, physics, and chemistry, the Nobel Prize is a highly valued honor.
