When it comes to online statistics, the most important statistics at the end of the day are how many orders or questions you have received. However, your ability to improve your order and site performance will depend on your understanding of some of your website's basic traffic statistics. Here are some things to keep in mind.
First, forget the "hits". Whenever someone asks for a file, it is a hit. When you visit a webpage, you will be requesting several files at once: the page file and the files for all the graphics on the page. By visiting one page on the site, you register a few songs. "Hitting" is a vague term and does not give you a good picture of what is happening on your site.
The more accurate an indicator of your traffic, as well as the more useful statistics, the number of unique visitors you get each day. Internet statistics are far from accurate, but your unique number of visitors will give you an incredible idea of how many people visit your website on any given day. Compare this number with the number of orders or queries you receive, and you may be able to determine your conversion rate.
One of the most important online statistics you should always look for is guidelines. A referrer is a website where someone visited before coming to your site. Search engines are important links, and sites linked to you are other links. Compare the traffic you passed with the traffic volume and you will see how many people just posted to your url and how many came after seeing your link elsewhere.
Knowing where your visitors are coming from is very important, but it is even better if you can get more details about this type of traffic. That's why you should also look for search terms that people use when they come out of a search engine. Multiple trackers or log analysis system will provide you with the search terms used in the targeted search engines.
Look at these terms and see if you get targeted traffic. If what you consider to be your most important keywords are not at the top of the search terms that people actually used to find you, you should adjust your website content accordingly.
What people do on your site is also important. What pages do they use to promote your site, and on which pages do they leave the site? Which pages are most frequently visited and which pages are most visited? Lastly, what is the traffic pattern on your site?
Good tracking or analysis programs will tell you how to click on the people who take it from your site. How to click on the sequence of pages that people are following as they pass through your site. For example, if your visitors are not limited to your order page, but follow a sequence that leads them off the site without ordering, you can check your site again and fix weak areas.
You can gain access to these statistics in a number of ways
1. Your hosting provider may have a built-in traffic analysis system, such as Awstats and Weblizer. Both programs are great and once installed on your server you should use them. Just log in to your account and view your statistics online.
2. You can analyze the logs of access to your site using programs installed on your computer. I love the OpenWebScope program, which is available at www.openwebscope.com to Get a trial version, analyze your site's log file and keep a visitor's report on your website. The same program is provided by http://www.sawmill.co.uk/
3. Paste the Java Script tracking code on your pages. A few companies offer java script trackers. Once your tracker is installed, all you have to do is log in to the site to see your statistics. Some free trackers, such as the one at http://extreme-dm.com/tracking. There are also various paid services that offer the same method of collecting statistics.
4. Google recently purchased an Urchin tracking system and now offers a free statistics reporting service, in their Google Analytics system. Unfortunately, you can only enter the waiting list as the system was heavily registered for its opening days.
Collect statistics for your website using the easy way for you and use this data to improve the performance of your website. Once you get an idea of who your visitors are, how they find your website and which pages they visit on your website, you can make changes and improvements that will enhance your online success.
