Daily OPD is seeing 2-3 patients suffering from joint pain    

The most common causes of chronic pain in joints are: Osteoarthritis, a common type of arthritis, happens over time when the cartilage, the protective cushion in between the bones, wears away. The joints become painful and stiff. Osteoarthritis develops slowly and usually occurs during middle age.

Joints form the connections between bones. They provide support and help you move. Any damage to the joints from disease or injury can interfere with your movement and cause a lot of pain.

Joint pain is not just limited to older people anymore. There is a rise in joint pain among young adults, including those who have recovered from Covid-19. A large number of youngsters are complaining of bone and joint problems. It is imperative to take care of your joints by exercising daily, eating a well-balanced diet, and maintaining optimum weight.      

Nowadays, joint and bone pain is a common occurrence in young adults. “Arthritis, bursitis that is the inflammation of the cushioning pads around joints, obesity, lupus, gout, an injury, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis are some of the worrisome factors behind joint pain. A majority of older people seek treatment for joint pain and discomfort every year. Currently, young adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are also complaining of joint pain due to working from home and eating high fat and sugar diet, along with those who have recovered from Covid-19. The symptoms of it are swollen, red and tender joints, Constant pain and fever. 15-20% young patients suffering from joint pain at their early 40 age between 35-40” said Dr Vishwajeet Chavan, Orthopedica Surgeon, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Pune.     

Dr Ashish Suryavanshi, Orthopedic Surgeon, Lokmanya Hospital Said, The cause for the joint pain can be attributed to heavy physical activity or even sprains. Over a period of time, when the bones deteriorate, it can invite several conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune condition) and osteoporosis (a common bone disease wherein the body loses bone, makes little bone, or both). tendinitis, or inflammation of the tendon, an infection of the bone or joint, overuse of a joint, cancer, or rickets due to low vitamin D can lead to joint pain. Percentage of young adults getting joint pain is increasing day by day. Women are more commonly get affected than men. It is seen that 2-3 out of the patients who come to the OPD every day are suffering from joint pain.     

“To manage joint pain, opt for a healthy diet consisting of fresh vegetables that are good for the bones, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and fish. Take enough sunlight every day, and keep monitoring your vitamin D levels. Exercise to maintain an optimum weight. Stretch before exercising to avoid injuries,” said Dr Chavan.    

“If your pain is mild, take medication as prescribed by the doctor, take a warm bath, physiotherapy and rest.. Some people may also require joint replacement surgery due to their deteriorating condition,” concluded Dr Suryavashi.        

Cause of Joint Pain   

Joint pain is extremely common, especially as you age. In one national survey, about one-third of adults reported having joint pain within the past 30 days. Knee pain was the most common complaint, followed by shoulder and hip pain. But joint pain can affect any part of your body, from your ankles and feet to your shoulders and hands.  

A wide range of conditions can lead to painful joints:   

  • Osteoarthritis, a “wear and tear” disease, is the most common type of arthritis.  
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that happens when your body attacks its own tissues.    
  • Bursitis is when sacs of fluid that help cushion your joints get inflamed.   
  • Gout is a form of arthritis that most often affects your big toe joint.   
  • Strains, sprains, and other injuries.
