ISRO launches PSLV-C53 mission with three satellites from Singapore
The spacecraft carried three satellites to Low Earth Orbit, deploying them at an altitude of 570 km measured from the equator.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched three satellites from Singapore on Thursday on its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The PSLV-C53 mission was launched from the second launch pad at Salish Drawn Space Center.
ISRO earlier said this would be the second dedicated commercial mission of its commercial arm, the New Space India Limited (NEIL), and the 55th involving India's space workhorse - the PSLV.
The three satellites are - DS-EO and Nebular (both belonging to Singapore and built by the Republic of Korea's Star Initiative) and the 2.8 kg Scoob-1 of Singapore's Nan yang Technological University (ITU), news agency PTI said.
The DS-EO carries an electro-optic, multi-spectral payload with 0.5 m resolution imaging capability, while the Nebular is Singapore's first small commercial satellite carrying a SAR payload that is capable of providing images 24 hours a day and in all weather conditions.
The SCOOBY satellite is the first in the Student Satellite Series (S3-I) - a hands-on student training program from the ITU's Satellite Research Center (SPARC).
It accompanies the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) orbiting the earth as a platform, ISRO tweeted. The POEM uses the spent PS4 stage as an orbital platform, ISRO said, noting this is the first time it will orbit the earth as a platform.
This will be the second PSLV mission of the year; in February, ISRO launched PSLV-C52 with the Earth observation satellite EOS-04 and two smaller satellites.
The mission proposes to demonstrate the utilization of the spent upper stage of the launch vehicle as a platform for scientific payloads after the separation of the satellites.
DS-EO carries an Electro-Optic, multi-spectral payload that will provide full color images for land classification, and serving humanitarian assistance and disaster relief needs, ISRO said in a release.
Nebular, meanwhile, is capable of providing images in day and night and under all weather conditions. The Scooby satellite is the first satellite in the Student Satellite Series (S3-I), a hands-on student training program.
SRO is attempting a new experiment with the four-stage rocket and use the fourth stage (PS4) to perform PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) activity. Under this, the team will perform in-orbit scientific experiments using the spent PS4 stage as an orbital platform.
The launch vehicle is capable of taking up to 1,750 kg of payload to Sun-Synchronous Polar Orbits of 600 km altitude. It has also been used to launch various satellites into Geosynchronous and Geostationary orbits, like satellites from the IR NSS constellation.
PSLV is 44 meters in length and has a diameter of 2.8 meters, with a lift-off mass of 320 tons. The second launch pad has so far conducted 29 other launches.
This was the second PSLV mission of the year after ISRO successfully launched the PSLV-C52 mission in February this year by injecting the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-04), into an intended sun-synchronous polar orbit of 529 km altitude.
The mission also placed two small satellites, a student satellite INSPIREsat-1, and a technology demonstrator satellite, INS-2TD, a precursor to India-Bhutan Joint Satellite INS-2B.
