What is Your Time Worth?

I have seen a lot of articles here talking about how time is the most important currency we have.
These articles talk about how to best calculate your time based on your income to help frame how you should and should not structure your day.
While I agree with the concept of time being the most important currency we have, I take issue with calculating time based on income and then using that number to guilt you into action.
For example, let’s say you make $50,000 per year before taxes. That is a total of $4,166.67 per month. Assuming you work a standard 40 hour per week job, this calculates to $24 per hour.
Now, let’s assume you are tired of your job and want to building something of your own. You can’t make any progress on this on it during your working hours so you are forced to work after hours.
One day you are struggling to make progress on your side project when a friend texts asking you to come to a movie. You say yes jumping at the opportunity to get away.
Let’s again assume the movie is 2.5 hours long and the commute to and from the theater is 30 min, for a total of 3 hours away. This totals to $72 in “lost” time plus the cost of the movie and any snacks you buy. Let’s say the total comes out to $100 because movie theater snacks aren’t cheap.
These articles would argue that the $100 spent on the movie wasn’t worth it and you would have been better spent slaving away at your side project.
I’m oversimplifying to make a point. And that point is this is all worse...
For starters, I don’t believe in using current salary figures to calculate your hourly worth. Salary/income is a number someone else set for you. It is almost always low and should not be used as a measure of your worth.
Maybe your real “worth” is $50 per hour. Does this mean the movie has now cost $178 in lost time?
No.
This brings me to my second point.
You should not feel guilty about taking time for yourself.
If you’re struggling with how to move forward with your project, maybe taking a 3-hour break to go see a movie is the best thing you could possibly do. Those 3 hours away could unlock something in your brain jumping you ahead 10 hours in total work.
But this isn’t really about work or income. This is about living the life you want.
Your time is valuable, but it’s just that, yours. You get to choose what to do with it and what it is worth. You get to decide if you spend it watching a movie or working on a side project. You get to determine it all. No one knows the value of time, you have because you are the real owner of it. I really don't care about the people that don't care about their time and that's why I will always be with the people that are fully connected with time efficiency...
I hope this helps. I would like to hear what really matters in your life.
