How is Waste Managed in Malaysia? Types, Methods & Best Practices

Keeping our planet’s ecosystems healthy, safe and sanitary is beneficial when trash is correctly managed. There is no shortage of systems, esp. recycling and co-processing, and some waste management systems are vastly superior in effectiveness.

These practices are arranged in a waste management hierarchy which classifies them according to the environmental impact of the various systems. A lot of factors influence the ways we manage waste. So, let’s unpack them.

The different types of waste management

The standard dictionary defines waste as something “no longer useful or required after the completion of a process.”

The waste management hierarchy illustrates how that definition is incomplete. As long as materials are managed properly, they can have value.

The most popular strategies are as follows:

  • Recycling

Recycling happens to be one of the the most straightforward ways to provide support to a circular economy and during that process materials are also greatly conserved. It is, in essence, the process of converting waste materials into different products which can be used again. The waste management system’s collection, sorting and processing stages, as well as remanufacturing stages, can be accomplished with some plastic, paper, glass and metal. It is, however, important to note that these steps and requirements are vastly different.

  • Waste-to-Energy

Waste-to-energy processes waste into forms of energy such as electricity or heat, with maintaining the original form of waste as much as possible. It is a win-win situation since energy is produced while conserving energy during the waste processing. Commonly used methods include co-processing, where companies use energy recovery via waste combustion to produce energy and raw materials. This has worked especially well within the cement industry and is a good approach to managing truly contaminated recyclables.

  • Composting

Composting is a part of a biological cycle and is able to transform organic matter within waste into compost within a given period of time. The finished material is biodegradable and compostable, with the ability to replace chemical fertilizers while decreasing methane emissions from a landfill.

  • Incineration

Disposal incineration burns waste above a thousand degrees in a furnace. It is like waste-to-energy conversions, albeit receiving less credit because energy is lost.

Although this form of incineration is one of the most wasteful, it still fondly remembered due to less refuse creation, unlike co2 and other toxins released to the environment.

  • Landfills

Landfills are well privateized, despite most claims lacking concreete evidence of any potential beneifts to the ecology, ecosystem, and mankind. Landfills are ‘economically efficient’ in the sense that people do not view the time spent and efforts futile in regards to building advanced waste management systems. Failing to complete the recycling systems is the most costly mistake one can make.

These sites are considered useful in preventing pollution to be released, however, waste tends to pollute the surroundings, causing major disruption to the ecosystem.

Mountains of radomly assorted trash can be found across the Earth in the form of landfills. Ancient scientist would argue that to this very day, some of the remnants are still highly venomous, and can take almost an eternity to decompose. Landfills are a major, often single-handedly contributor to smoke in the air and to the environment. In some cases, however, it is an unfortunate necessity to Illinois.
