Discomfort in the big toe or hall UX joint is commonly due to arthritis. This is often recognized as hall UX rigid us. There are many different conditions of the big toe joint that can cause pain, with gout pain being another well-known. Sometimes the hall UX joint is completely stiff, as well as other times it is not stiff, it just has a lower range of flexibility that is less than normal. The most common cause of hall UX rigid us is osteoarthritis in the big toe joint. This particular osteoarthritis comes from years of wear and tear on the big toe joint due to an alignment problem in a way that the joint will not move as it should. Another reason for osteoarthritis can be a one-time (or maybe several) joint injury that causes some damage to the hall UX joint and provokes the appearance of osteoarthritis. Generally, the pain from this begins as mild discomfort, sometimes with periodic sharp shooting pains. After some time it gets progressively worse and can be quite painful. It will also change the way people walk.
Therapies for hall UX rigid us are relatively limited because there is no solution for osteoarthritis. The first method is to manage the sensation of pain, which may include injections into the hall UX joint as well as the use of prescription pain medications. This will often almost certainly work well in the short term, but will not resolve the condition. Shoes that are firmer or have a rocker under the shoe will effectively limit movement in that joint of the big toe or hall UX, but still allow almost regular walking. You can also get a carbon fiber insole that can be placed in the shoes to give them rigidity to ensure that the big toe joint does not move when you walk. Foot supports will also often be used and can often have a cradle or other design element that ends below the big toe or hall UX joint to help reduce movement in the joint as well. You can also find other types of padding that you can use and big toe joint taping that can also be used to limit movement with the joint. Surgical treatment is another option to consider for hall UX rigid us. There are several different techniques that a surgeon can use. One of them is to simply seal the joint. This will certainly stop the pain and will definitely affect the way you walk a bit. It's still a great choice. Yet another surgical technique is to get rid of part of the bone from around the joint so that it can move a little more easily. The third operative option is to replace the thumb joint with an artificial one or insert a spacer into the hall UX joint, so that the arthrosis in the joint areas is removed and the surfaces of both joints move on this spacer. The operating surgeon will have to decide which option to choose, depending on how much the joint can be destroyed and how functional the bone around the joint is and how deep the osteoarthritis extends.
