Members of the militant group Islamic State (IS) have clashed with US-backed Kurdish forces in Syria. At least 120 people were killed in the clashes. The dead included seven civilians. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based human rights group, said in a statement on Saturday.
The clashes between Kurdish and IS fighters have been going on since last Thursday night. The clashes erupted when hundreds of IS members revolted at the Kurdish-run Go prison in the country's town. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the dead included at least six IS members and 39 Kurdish fighters. Prison guards are also on the list of those killed. They were killed in clashes inside and outside the jail.
The group, which monitors the war, says IS carried out the first attack to free its captive members from the prison. They also occupied the prison arsenal. The group added that many IS prisoners had escaped from prisons during the clashes. Kurdish forces have been able to detain hundreds of them. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there had been heavy fighting overnight on Saturday. Kurdish forces have taken control of the prison and are trying to deactivate IS members in and around the area.
