The Mexican army has arrested the son of drug kingpin El Chapo, who shook the world. Kuligagan City itself turned into a war zone due to the action taken by the army and the air force. 29 people were killed in the gunfight. The airport itself was shut down as the planes came under attack.
Huaquin El Chapo Guzman... is a widely known name in the world of drug trafficking. He ran the world's largest drug trafficking empire in Mexico, called the "Sinaloa Cartel."
Caught in 2019, he is serving a life sentence in an American prison for the crimes of drug trafficking and money laundering.
After El Chapo's capture, part of the Sinaloa Cartel went under the control of his son, Ovidio Guzmán-López. Nicknamed "The Mouse," Guzmán López has become a major headache for the US and Mexican governments following his father's narcotics racket.
Subsequently, both countries set their sights on Guzmán López, and he continued to escape, surpassing the movie stars. With the help of the United States, the Mexican military, which had been continuously monitoring his movements for more than six months, set a date to capture Guzmán López. Accordingly, the Mexican Army went into the field to capture Ovidio Guzman-Lopez, who was hiding in the city of Culiacan early yesterday (Friday).
The army took complete control of Kuliagan city. The army launched a manhunt after warning people not to come out of their homes. Acting on intelligence, the military moved swiftly to arrest Guzmán-López. López's allies, enraged when they learned of the army's approach, launched sporadic attacks. They attacked the soldiers with sophisticated guns.
Roadblocks were placed here and there to restrict the movement of soldiers. They torched the vehicles on the roads. They ransacked shops and commercial establishments and resorted to violence.
A fierce gun battle broke out between the drug gangs and the army at several places in Culiacan city. The airport there has also not escaped the attacks of drug cartels. They opened fire on a passenger plane that was about to take off. Fortunately, no one was injured as the passengers and staff inside the plane ducked under their seats.
Two military fighter jets were also fired upon by Guzmán-López allies. Subsequently, Kuliagan Airport was closed. There, flights stopped arriving and departing. Outdoing the movies, the Mexican military closes in on Guzmán-López, while gun battles with sporadic drug cartels rage in the city of Culiacan.
The Mexican military captured Guzmán-López after a heavy firefight and immediately flew him to the Mexican capital in a helicopter.
The manhunt for Guzmán-López and the ensuing violence and gunfight left 10 soldiers and 19 members of drug cartels dead. 35 soldiers were injured. The Mexican President, Andrés López Obrador, said that no innocent civilians were killed in this hunt because the military had taken the necessary steps in advance.
The city of Culiacan has become a battleground as a clash between drug cartels and the military has erupted in the hunt for Guzman-Lopez. The Mexican government has sent an additional thousand troops to keep the situation under control.
A holiday has been declared for all schools in Sinaloa province, which includes the city of Culiacan, as a precaution against possible attacks by Guzmán-López allies. The Mexican government continues to monitor the situation there.
It is worth recalling that Ovidio Guzmán-López was arrested in 2019 by the Mexican military, only to bow to threats of violence by his associates and then release him. Not only Guzmán López, but also his 3 brothers, are key commanders of Father El Chapo's Sinaloa Cartel.
Guzmán López, along with his brother Huaqun, alone trafficked 2,200 kg per month through 11 methamphetamine labs in Mexico's Sinaloa state. The United States has reported that the drug is being produced in large quantities. Now that Guzmán López has been caught, the Mexican government has laid the net for his drug-trafficking brothers.
Ovidio Guzmán-López, caught in a military manhunt, is being held in a jail in Mexico City that has already been prepared with special security arrangements. A Mexican court has barred his extradition to the United States.
