Iran live news: US consulate in Dubai hit; Israel attacks Tehran, Beirut

  • US and Israel’s bombardment of Iran and Lebanon continues, with a strike on a hotel near Beirut and the building of the Assembly of Experts in the Iranian city of Qom as the death toll surpasses 800 in both countries.
  • Tehran continues retaliatory attacks on Israel and US targets in the Middle East for a fourth night, with strikes reported on Washington’s consulate in Dubai and a port in the city of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.
  • US President Donald Trump says the US is prepared to deploy the navy to escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran declared the vital waterway closed – a disruption already rippling through the region, with Iraq slowing or halting oil production at the Rumaila field and the West Qurna 2 project.

Will Iran participate in the football World Cup?

With the football World Cup less than 100 days away, President Trump says he did not care whether Iran participated in the event that is being co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.

I really don’t care. I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes,” Trump told Politico.

Iran’s football federation president Mehdi Taj said the viciousness of the attacks by US and Israeli forces did not augur well for the World Cup.

Stopping short of discussing a boycott, Taj said senior Iranian sports officials would evaluate the situation before deciding whether any action should be taken.
