Last month, when speaking with students at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in the United States, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that India's 5G is a native product rather than an imported one. Sitharaman also stated that the Indian government is willing to share its indigenous 5G technology and infrastructure with other countries.

Back home, a few days before the finance minister's trip to the United States, India's Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw claimed that over 200 cities in the country will have access to 5G within six months.

According to a report in Business Standard, Reliance is developing a 5G software stack with its own R&D team and its US subsidiary Radisys.
The emergence of platforms such as O-RAN or Open-RadioAccess Networks has assisted Indian carriers in developing their own 5G technology. For example, Airtel has partnered with TCS to develop an O-RAN-based radio and an indigenous 5G stack. Tatas has purchased a share in Tejas Networks, a producer and supplier of networking gear such as radio, which has in turn purchased Saankhya Labs, a developer of 5G software. TCS will serve as a system integrator, connecting the hardware and software components on an O-RAN platform. Airtel-Tata would most likely be a win-win situation for both parties, as Tatas will get to test proof of concept while Airtel will acquire exclusive technology.
It is a tough task for other domestic telecom gear makers to build 5G technology. The government implemented a PLI system.for telecom equipment manufactured last year While the 31 businesses selected under the plan committed to invest more than Rs 3,000 crore over four years, these companies have no orders from operators for 5G equipment, and the incentives under PLI are only paid when the companies begin manufacturing.
Few businesses that have designed 5G radios, according to R K Bhatnagar, director general at Voice of Indian Communications Technology Enterprises, have no orders. According to Bhatnagar, local gear producers should focus on the private network sector and the rising number of government contracts where the necessity for 5G equipment such as radios is not as rigorous or as huge.

Complete indigeneity in 5G infrastructure and technology remains a pipe dream for India. However, as compared to 3G or 4G, there is some technological development with 5G.
