India will soon have access to 5G services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT5G )'s spectrum auction, through which spectrum will be allotted to bidders to provide 5G services to the public and businesses, has finally received approval from the Union Cabinet, which is presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the cabinet, the speed and capacity offered by the 5G network will be roughly ten times greater than those offered by the current 4G services.
By the end of July 2022, an auction for a total of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum with a 20-year validity period is expected to take place. The spectrum auction announced today is a crucial component of building the BharatKa5G ecosystem, according to telecom and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnav.
The auction "will be place for spectrum in several Low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), Mid (3300 MHz), and High (26 GHz) frequency bands," according to a PIB official release.
The Telecom Sector Reforms, which were unveiled in September 2021, are said to boost the spectrum auction. The changes include no Spectrum Usage Charges (SUC) on the spectrum purchased in the future auction, which will significantly reduce the operational costs of telecom networks for service providers.
The cabinet added that "there is no mandatory necessity to make upfront payment by the successful bidders" for the first time. Spectrum payments can be made in 20 equal annual instalments, each of which must be paid in full at the start of the year. The Modi government made this declaration in an official announcement: "The bidders would be offered an option to surrender the spectrum after 10 years with no future responsibilities with respect to remaining instalments."
"To facilitate the roll-out of 5G services, sufficient backhaul spectrum must be available. The Cabinet has resolved to provisionally assign 2 carriers in the E-band, each with a bandwidth of 250 MHz, to the telecom service providers in order to meet the backhaul demand. The Cabinet also resolved to double the amount of conventional microwave backhaul carriers in the 13, 15, 18, and 21 GHz bands, according to the press statement.
Ten times quicker than 4G, 5G is anticipated. According to the official PIB release, "it is anticipated that Telecom Service Providers will use the Mid and High band spectrum to roll-out 5G technology-based services capable of providing speed and capacities that would be about 10 times higher than what is possible through the current 4G services."
The government declared that a total of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum with a 20-year expiration date at the end of July would be put up for auction. These frequencies include 26 GHz, 2100 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100, 2300, and 2300 MHz.
13 significant cities will get 5G service as part of the first phase. Of these, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurugram, Kolkata, Lucknow, Pune, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Ahemdabad, and Chandigarh are among the most notable.
