How India Has The World's 4th Best Military
India's military ranks as the world's fourth most powerful military recently released in the GFP (Global Firepower) annual defense power among 140 countries. Here are some charts and data analyses that reveal how India compares against the strongest militaries and its rival China.
In the 2022 ranking, the USA occupies the top slot among 140 countries with a Power Score Index of 0.0453, following while zero is considered a perfect score. Russia follows the chart in the second slot with a score of 0.0501, followed by China (0.0511), India (0.0979), and Japan (0.119).

This report only considers nations' fighting capability, nuclear power not included, and the developing weapons in construction.
The GFP considers over 50 factors by which they categorize the nations; factors, including workforce and weapon diversity to defense budget logistic capacity to calculate a war-like situation capability.
"Our unique, in-house formula allows smaller, more technologically-advanced nations to compete with larger, lesser-developed ones, and special modifiers, a form of bonuses and penalties, are applied to refine the annual list further," claims GFP.
Workforce
India has 30% active military personnel– compared to China with over 60% and Russia with 60%, for US paramilitary work as a backup. The total sum of both active and reserved military personnel in all para forces and armed forces of India accounts for 36.82 lakh.
Comparing Air Power
IAF (Indian Air Force) is the world's fourth-largest Air Force, but the GPF shows a significant gap among the above superpowers. The US Air force is approximately six times larger than IAF, RUSSIAN Air force is nearly two times larger. The gap between China and India is narrower, but unfortunately, when it comes to advanced machinery, IAF lags.
On Ground
India holds the top 5 ranks in two categories of Land Infantry–combat tank fleet size and towered artillery. After Russia and South Korea, China and the US stand in 10th and 12th rank. On the other hand, India Lags in advanced machinery, Self-propelled artillery (ranked 37), overtaken by Pakistan, Turkey, Ukraine, and some European countries. India has 100 such systems, China 4,120, and Russia with a dominance size of 6,574.
But keeping these factors in mind, the Indian Army has 50+ modernization projects to overcome these factors; the Indian Army is about to invest Rs 1.73 lakh crore.
Naval Strength
India has the 7th largest Naval Fleet among 140 nations, with 295 warships and submarines, while China tops the chart with 777. But the rapid expansion of INS (Indian Naval Ship) made a fare growth in advanced vessels. For instance, corvettes, multi-role frigates, and destroyers are considered 4th, 5th, and 6th, respectively.
India's second aircraft carrier–and the first indigenous one–Vikrant is scheduled to be inducted into INS later this year. China is currently reading with its third one, and the US is far away with 11 such carriers.
India is currently behind China, the UK, and Italy, with two operational aircraft carriers. India can climb higher in 2023. But unfortunately, India doesn't have a single countermine warship ship; hence laggard not just from European countries but also in neighboring countries Bangladesh, which has such five vessels, and Pakistan 3.
Military Progress So Far
India has around Rs 3.70 lakh crore defense budget ($49.6 billion), which is the world's sixth-largest defense budget; China has 5.35 lakh crore ($250 billion), Russia 4.78 lakh crore ($154 billion), UK 5.16 lakh crore ($68 billion), Germany 3.79 lakh crore ($50 billion).
However, Budget 2022 significantly increases the allocation to the ministry of defense (MoD), which is good news for the ongoing military modernization drive in the country.
"For FY 2022-23, the Finance Minister has allocated Rs 5,25,166.15 crore to the MoD.This is Rs 46,970 crore or 10% more than the previous year's allocation of Rs 4,78,196 crore and the sharpest increase in the defence budget in recent years," writes Sameer Patil, a senior fellow with Delhi-based think tank Observer Research Foundation (ORF), in a recent analysis brief.
Sitharaman added a total defense allocation of Rs 1.52 lakh crore had been set aside for capital expenditure, including purchasing new arms, fighter jets, warships, and other military equipment. Budget allocation for capital outlay for the current was Rs 1.35 lakh crore, but the revised estimate showed the expenditure at Rs 1.38 lakh crore.
"But this budgetary hike masks the challenge of the availability of resources. In the last decade, the defence budget has grown at an annual average rate of 9%. However, this increase is barely keeping up with the inflation and the demands of the three services," says Patil.
However, the latest budget makes a determined effort to promote "Atmanirbharta in equipment for the armed forces," as Sitharaman puts it, and get India out of the strategically vulnerable position of the world's second-largest arms importer after Saudi Arabia.
If done right, this will boost domestic defense production and job creation, bring down the import bill, thereby improving the foreign exchange reserves — incidentally one of the parameters considered in the annual GFP defense review — and propel India's military might to greater heights.
