The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is a public technical university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. As one of the Indian Institutes of Technology IITs, it is recognized as an Institute of National Importance and is consistently rated as one of India's most prestigious universities. Established in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the former government of West Germany, it was the third IIT established by the Government of India. IIT Madras has been ranked the top engineering institute in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of Education since its inception in 2016.
IT Madras offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees across 16 disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management. About 600 faculty belonging to science and engineering departments and centres of the Institute are engaged in teaching, research and industrial consultancy.
The institute has 16 academic departments and advanced research centres across disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories. The academic calendar is organised around the semester. Each semester provides a minimum of seventy days of instruction in English. Students are evaluated on a continuous basis throughout the semester. Evaluation is done by the faculty, a consequence of the autonomous status granted to the institute. Research work is evaluated on the basis of the review thesis by peer examiners both from within the country and abroad. Ordinances that govern the academic programme of study are prepared by the Senate, the highest academic body within the institute.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) on Monday unveiled its first electric racing car. The race car has been prepared by a team of 45 students from 10 departments. The EV car has the ability to accelerate from 0-100 km in four seconds and reach a maximum distance of 160 km.
The vehicle, 'RFR23' will participate in the Formula India event to be held at Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore in January 2023. The students aim to take their car to the Formula Student Germany event in August next year.
The institute's director V. Kamakoti, who unveiled the car, said that the students developed the car through simulation during the COVID-19 pandemic and later made it physical. The vehicle is an improvement over previous versions, which were also built by students. It took the students a year to build the car
The aim of the exercise is to understand how to improve the future generation of automobiles, Mr. Kamakoti explained. "Any technology should be thoroughly stress-tested. We are stress-testing the batteries to gain insight into the battery efficiency of other vehicles," explained the director.
“The transition from combustion to electric vehicle was as drastic as it was necessary. The global EV industry is still in its infancy and the potential for growth and technological advancement in this area is huge,” he said, adding that the vehicles to be developed next The stage will be autonomous (driverless).
The students aim to participate in the driverless car race category by 2025.
The EV uses the Shakti microprocessor, which has been developed indigenously by Mr. Kamakoti and his team. The microprocessor controls all the parameters in the car.
Satyanarayanan Seshadri, advisor to the student team, said, “Raftaar will soon become a platform for building innovations of the future. This car is the culmination of research, innovation and perseverance displayed by the team.
Karthik Karumanchi, captain of the student team, said the focus was on making a safe, durable and reliable EV. The team endeavored to create innovative solutions to issues faced by the industry. The focus was on proper thermal management of the battery, a data logging and visualization interface, and an accurate state-of-charge estimator for the battery pack.
