Ichihashi was 28 years old when a 22-year-old British tutor who had agreed to teach him privately in English first met him in a Tokyo café in 2007. After some time, Ichihashi won her over to his house. The pair rode in a taxi. She instructed the cabbies to wait outside for her while she entered the apartment. She stayed in his flat and didn't leave. After seven minutes, the driver departed. The following day, her employment at the Nova language school in Kiowa reported her missing, and her parents were notified. She was discovered dead in a bathtub filled with sand on Ichihashi's balcony two days later, setting off a media frenzy and huge uproar.
Six months prior to the incident, she had moved to Japan from the United Kingdom.
The news of her rape and murder shocked people all around the world. When the police arrived at Hisashi house and discovered Hawker's death, Ichihashi was able to give them the slip. He was nowhere to be discovered for almost three years, despite the fact that many people were putting pressure on the authorities and demanding justice for Hawker.
FACE CHANGED TO DUPE COPS
Following the discovery of Hawker's death in Hisashi flat on March 26, 2007, the Japan police began a national manhunt. The police advertised significant rewards for information that resulted in his arrest as the pressure mounted. He eluded justice for almost three years in spite of all police efforts. Ichihashi moved about Japan, went by fictitious aliases, and worked odd jobs to pay for multiple facial plastic surgery procedures. After his plastic surgeon notified the authorities, he was finally detained in 2009 as he awaited a ship to the southern island of Okinawa in a port in western Japan.
He attempted to cut his own lip and remove moles from his face in an effort to avoid being apprehended by the authorities. His attempts to alter his appearance ultimately resulted in his arrest after clinic personnel who performed nose surgery became suspicious and denounced him to police, according to the BBC.

Ichihashi, a former horticulture student, authored a book about his life on the run, including his time spent living on a lonely island and fishing during the day. The book became a bestseller, and Hisashi reportedly requested that any profits go to the Hawker family or a charitable organization, but the victim's family apparently rejected this request and just wanted harsh punishment.
LIFE SENTENCES IN POLICE
Ichihasi was given a life sentence in 2011. We can assume that the defendant had an intention to murder the victim when he put pressure on her neck, Chiba District Court's presiding judge Masada Hot ta was reportedly cited as saying at the time in a Reuters story. Chiba District Court is located close to Tokyo. The victim's regret over having to put an end to her 22-year-old existence, which was full of opportunity, cannot be measured, according to Hot ta. Ichihashi had previously denied wanting to kill a Hawker, claimed he didn't know he was choking her
In Britain and Japan, there was extensive media coverage of the case, and during the hearing, 950 people are said to have gathered in the courtroom's public gallery.
