In the Indian state of Karnataka, the wearing of hijab has led to harassment and denial of access to classrooms. The matter has also been taken to court. In this situation, the Karnataka High Court has banned the students from wearing hijab religious clothes for the time being.
The Hindustan Times, an Indian media outlet, reported that the matter was being discussed in court. The court said that the students should not wear such clothes until the controversy has been settled. The matter will be heard again next Monday.
Earlier, a court hearing was held on Wednesday. It was later sent to a full bench of the High Court for hearing. The full bench comprises Chief Justice Rituraj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice JM Khaji. The hijab issue was heard in this bench on Thursday.
On the issue of hijab, Muslim students in Karnataka have complained that they are being discriminated against in the classroom. Lawyer Sanjay Hegre is fighting this case against the students. He told the court yesterday that nowhere in the Karnataka Education Act was anything said about school uniforms. According to Live Law, the lawyer said that what the students will wear is a matter for the school.
However, the Advocate General took part in the hearing on behalf of the Karnataka government. He said the state government wants the law to be. But in school or college one group will come with their heads covered, another group will come after Gerua Uttar - it cannot happen.
The crisis started in Udupi district of Karnataka. This is what happened last December. Six students of Government Girls PU College in Udupi district complained that they were not allowed to enter the classroom to wear hijab. Then the Muslim students started protesting. The controversy over the hijab began in the state amid widespread criticism. The protests have now started in various states. Apart from this, all kinds of demonstrations and rallies in the vicinity of educational institutions in Bangalore city have been banned for two weeks.
All schools and colleges in Karnataka have been closed for three days to handle the situation. Besides, politicians have also started talking about it. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has expressed support for Muslim students in a tweet. He writes that what they wear is their own choice. This right is protected by the constitution.
There have been several petitions in Udupi regarding the hijab debate. Muslim female students have made these appeals. The Supreme Court of India has joined it. However, the Supreme Court has left the matter to the Karnataka High Court. The court said, let's see what the Karnataka High Court decides first.
There is no real issue in front of the yogi opponents, so there is no government incentive to try to capitalize on religion, which does not benefit the Muslims. Such as Ayushman, Ujala, PM Nibas, Ration twice a month, 20 hours electricity, Gundaraj Khatam, Nari Suraksha. What else do you want? Do they really know what they want from people?
Now the time will talk.
